Thoughts on Stainless Ruger NO. 1's ???

So many of us are Ruger NO. 1 fans. I have one in 375H&H and love it. It was my first big bore and continues to be one of my favorites. I liked the caliber so much, I bought a stainless model 70 winchester and used it many times as well. I would like to know what you guys think of the Stainless Ruger NO. 1's ??? Mine is of the original blue/wood design. With so many people taking about the NO. 1's in 9.3x74R, I would like to know if anyone has a stainless NO. 1 in 9.3x74R and what they think of it ??? I have handled a couple stainless NO. 1's and they do seem a little heavier, mostly because of the laminated stock I believe. Stainless NO. 1 fans, come on down.........!!!

LOVE the #1's. 4 here currently, 2 on order and a #3 arriving tomorrow. What first attracted me to them was their old style class and classic style, which again emits a classic bit of class. Because of that, the stainless ones just don't interest me. IMO, they simply lack any of that classic style or class.

None ever made sooo.... In this case of such a classic design and classic chambering, anything but a nice blued/walnut model would be just wrong.

OOPS, my bad. I missread the catalog. It reads 7 calibers available in walnut or black laminate. But after looking again, not all are available in stainless. I am still interested in thoughts of stainless NO. 1's though. It is hard to beat the classic. I did see a nice 300 win mag lately and it looked sweet.

I have always preferred the blue/walnut #1, but the Lipsey #1s sure are nice. In fact, they have just ordered 250 units of 35 Whelen in Stainless/Walnut. The only #1s that just turn me off completely are the laminated stocks.

The ss/walnut ones aren't as bad as the ss/laminate ones but still not "right". I would like to see a blued/laminate though just to see what it looked like.

I have 5 or 6 in blue/walnut scoped and one ss/laminate with a peep sight. The ss/laminate in 45/70 is my wet weather brush gun and works well in that role. Doesn't look as nice as a blue/walnut, but it is still a Ruger no. 1 and they all look darn good to me.

I have 2 of the stainless with the deckwood lumber on it, would have been better if they offered the stainless/walnut combo like Lipsey has them special ordered every year. I've got one in the .35 Whelen and I love the looks of it.

I have a #1 in laminate stainless, and while it loses some of the classic look, I think it's somewhat "awe inspiring" in its own right. I debated for a long time whether or not I wanted the stainless, and honestly, decided on it because I like the way a laminate or two looks in the cabinet lined up with all of the blued and walnut. I have to say that when people are over, and look through the glass, that's the first one that gets commented on, or picked up.

It will never be the classic of it's older brother, but it's still a beautiful rifle.

I think it is almost impossible for a No.1 to not look good, but the stainless models definately pale in comparison to the classic beauty of the blue and walnut models. They certainly have a role in foul weather conditions and if i hunted dangerous game in poor weather areas i would consider one for sure.

Yeah, if I could have unlimited numbers of guns (sigh), I'd have a few stainless for sure. The walnut/stainless looks better to my taste, but
it takes all kinds, eh? Facing either limited numbers or a divorce I'll
keep after blued no. 1's and leave the stainless (and synthetic) to my
bolt action, bad weather gun for now.

Gentlemen,

I really enjoy the #1s, and while I am a bit of a traditionalist with blued steel and fine walnut, I have the #1H, .375 H&H in Stainless, and really like it. I have several other #1s that are blued. It is my bad-weather rifle, and it has seen some bad weather. During the last two deer seasons, I have hunted with a Sharps, but had the Stainless #1 as a backup in case of nasty weather. Well, the #1 has taken two mule deer, on the last day of each year's hunt, which also seemed to have the worst weather.

It may not be as romantically nostalgic, but it is a great rifle nonetheless.

Regards,
Schuter

I have been looking at a Stainless #1 in 45-70 as the proverbial bad weather gun to match my blued 45-70. I am with the crowd that prefers the traditional look of blued steel and walnut. My 45-70 has seen all elements. I've been setting up a Marlin 336 in 35 Rem for the wet weather back-up. Wish #1 weren't so expensive....I'd have a safe full of them!
