| A Thing Of Beauty Is A Joy Forever
Here is a quote from caryc from another thread titled "replacement grips for BH convertibles". I discovered it while doing a "search" on something totally unrelated.
Quote: "Well, I'm "other folks" and I can tell you why I frown on them. They are just butt ugly. They run the nice clean graceful lines of a single action six gun.
Here's a hint. The grips are held on with one tiny screw. It takes maybe 20 seconds to change a set of grips. If you want to shoot with them, fine, just make the gun pretty again after shooting.
If you don't care about the beauty and graceful lines of a single action why use one? Why not just shoot the double actions? If a gun is a utilitarian tool for you then leave the single actions for us "other folks" who appreciate the beauty of them.
This is nothing personal against you, I just did my best to explain what you apparently don't understand in your statement above.

Cary Chapman" Close quote.
Wow! That's pretty powerful stuff and it really resonated with me. You see, I'm one of the guilty to whom Mr. Chapman refers. One of the school of the function over form guys, BUT, after carefully considering, and pondering deeply, I completely "get" and agree with all Mr. Chapman wrote. 100%
In fact, his comment resonated so strongly that I immediately gathered my six shooters and removed the Herrett Shooting Star grips from all four. I replaced them with their originals. I've decided that I'm going to work at accurately shooting them with the original grips, with the exception of my full size Blackhawk 5 ½" .45 Convertible, which I shoot well and enjoy with the Herrett grips. That particular set even look pretty good on that revolver. I'll also continue to shoot my scoped Single Ten with the Herretts because I am demonstrably more accurate with them at long distances. However, when I return from the range trips with those two they shall be changed and reside in the safe in their original attire.
If by chance Mr. Chapman, you happen to read this thread, thanks for awakening and stimulating the right side of my brain, awakening my sensitivity, enhancing and completing my enjoyment of owning and appreciating the beauty of these superb Single Action Six Shooters.
Later this week I will add a picture to this post. I want to wait for my new Stainless, short 3 ¾" barrel, Super Blackhawk .44 magnum to arrive, so I can include it in the new "family photo", featuring all 5 of my single action six shooters, in their factory attire. Here's a "before" photo of the Blackhawk and Single Ten though. Oh, BTW, I also get that a scope is probably worse than ugly grips on a SA but some things just have to be compromised.
What say you folks? Is this preaching to the choir, or, are there some dissenting opinions.

It's what you like and want on your guns that counts. Period. If using thumb rest grips and a scope on your SAs gives you satisfaction and pleasure, who's to say your wrong? Not me.
I have a Single Ten, for instance, that I never intended to scope, but when I discovered just how accurate it was, a put a weigand mount and a small red dot on it to better utilize it's potential. Traditional? Not hardly, but I grin ear to ear now that it shoots like my fully modded Mark IIIs.

To each their own...however, uniqueness is just that, unique! I love to see what other's have done to their pistols / revolvers to make them more comfortable to shoot or to improve it's appearance!
BTW...nice looking revolvers!

Since I have some of Cary's grips on most of my single actions, I guess I'm the "choir." On the other hand, I really DO find the traditional grips more comfortable and quicker to point for me.

If I remember right, I took a lot of flack for that. But, I stand by what I said. Most people chose to completely ignore this part of my remarks. "Here's a hint. The grips are held on with one tiny screw. It takes maybe 20 seconds to change a set of grips. If you want to shoot with them, fine, just make the gun pretty again after shooting. "
They chose to ignore that fact that I said it was fine to use the big ugly grips if they help you shoot better. They just wanted to rip into me because I don't like those big butt ugly grips.
But, hey, it's personal taste. Is that not allowed on this forum? If some of you think those big grips are pretty, well then, more power to you. It's your gun, do what you want with it.
Remember what I said about the 20 seconds. I guess there are also people who just plain don't care how their gun looks. That's Ok too.
It's strictly a personal choice guys. I have no problem with that. To the OP, thanks for the kind words.

| Yep! Absolutely! As a traditionalist, I may not like Herrett or Rubber grips or scopes on Single Actions ... In fact I may just gag a bit .... choke choke.... But that is my opinion and feeling ONLY. Heck the gunfighter (sortof) style wood grips I like (Bearpaw grips) may just gag someone else! Whatever works for you is great! Having choices is the way it should be. Now a DA (Smith or Ruger), nothing can improve their looks ... so scope 'em, rubberize 'em, Red Dot 'em, or whatever...

An unfluted 686 with ahrend cocobolo grips really is pretty. I think my new sp 101 .22lr is gorgeous. I am just starting to appreciate the beauty of Ruger SA's. I have a hard time with the ejector rod housing being to the right of the barrel is looks uneven. But I am coming around. When it comes to aesthetics, I think to each there own.

| Exactly why I wrote that last sentence . I just knew someone else would have a 'different' opinion and different eye when it comes to aesthetics (sort of waving the red blanket in a bulls face ... so to speak)! But again. Perfectly ok. We still can 'get along' . It's strictly a personal choice!

| The New Family Photo
OK, here's my new family photo, including my latest addition, all wearing traditional grips. (You'll just have forgive the scope, it's a keeper.)
It's common knowledge that in any religion a "convert" is alway the most zealous, fervent, ardent and devout practitioner of the faith.
So, don't try to convince me with facts or logic, my mind is made up! I am a convert to Cary's philosophy: No Ugly Single Action Six Shooters. Well, except for scoped Single Ten's.
The photo, from top to bottom: Single Ten 5 ½", Single Six Convertible 4 ⅝", Blackhawk .45 Convertible 5 ½", Blackhawk Flattop .45 Convertible 4 ⅝" and the new addition, a Super Blackhawk .44 Magnum 3 ¾"
Ain't they purdier that the before photo? |

I don't have any scoped handguns but believe it or not a scope on a single action really doesn't bother me.
Maybe it's the fact that the scope is kind of pretty in itself, aesthetically, I mean.

I love wood grips on single actions especially from herret or others.
