| Lipsey's 45C/45ACP problems
Two weeks ago I bought a 5 1/2 blue Lipsey's convertible in 45 C/45 ACP. I started with the 45 ACP cylinders and all was well. Then I changed to the 45colt cylinder and it failed to cycle through all 6 chambers. Makes you wonder about their quality control and even if they actually fired the 45 colt case in the box with that gun. My dealer sent it back for repair. I contacted Lipsey’s and Ruger but so have not received any response. I expect a new firearm from Ruger to fully function and not require a trip back for repairs. I am one Very Disappointed customer.

Well, welcome to the Forum, Chuck. That's some first post.
How about you tell us what happened: "it failed to cycle through all 6 chambers" isn't especially specific. And, how long have the Ruger folks had the gun? If it's been a month and you've not heard anything, well, that would be a problem. If you just called last night, though, and are unhappy with them not having picked up the phone, that might not be.
We generally hear that people are pretty happy with their Rugers, and that the company sets it right when an occasional flaw gets out the door. Hope you come to a successful resolution very quickly and are able to get into enjoying your new convertible. |

Hi Erich,
I bought the gun on the 8/17 and sent it back on the 18th. I contacted both Lipsey's and Ruger on the 20th. The dealer said to expect 3 weeks for repair.
Your right, I could have been a little more clear on the re-cycle problem. I loaded all 6 chambers of the 45 Colt cyclinder but when using the action it would not cycle for all 6 chambers. It fired fine for the first couple rounds and then the action would not advance to the next chamber. It would spin for loading and unloading OK. The 45 ACP cyclinder worked fine and seem very accurate. Probably a simple gunsmith fix but it should have been found in quailty control or testing before shipment.
I have several Rugers, rifles and revolvers (SA and DA) and this is my second problem with the single actions. The first was on a new 44 Hunter where the barrel was not properly fit and came loose. The Lipsey's was my 5th in 45 Colt. I hate chasing brass in my 1911 and became interested in the 45 ACP SA after shooting a friends S&W 625.
I guess I thought the Lipsey's were under a little tighter control than the normal assembly line. Evidently that's not the case. I'm still happy with my other Rugers, just a little frustrated.

Hmmm, I wonder if your base pin was jumping forward. This would tend to not allow you to fully cock the hammer back (what you calling re-cycle?) as the the transfer bar would hit the bottom of the firing pin. About the only thing I can think of since you say you could open the gate and the cylinder would spin freely.
Anyway, Ruger will fix you up!
I have two flattop convertible .45s and enjoy them both. Quote: |

| Yeh, that is why I haven't bought a 1911 yet. Every time I go to the range and watch the others for 15 minutes trying to find their cases after a couple of magazines.... cures my itch .

Man, I hate chasing brass, too. I have a 625 and bought a limited edition TALO New Vaquero .45 ACP birdshead this year to supplement it - what fun! I sure hope Ruger gets you fixed up soon so that you can get to enjoying the gun as you deserve. |

The last two new Rugers that I bought had the base pins jump, but that quickly cleared itself up. Recently, I reloaded a case with a "high" primer that wouldn't allow the cylinder to rotate.

I got the Ruger back today. And, it looks like they fixed the problem. However, I never heard from Ruger or Lipsey's and no explanation of the problem.

Repairs are most always accompanied by a notice indicating what was done. Jumping to returning the gun so quickly w/o seeing exactly what was occurring as the problem I believe personally was a bit hasty. if one worked fine, why not some side by side examinations? It's so often a very easy fix be it user error or something mechanical. Maybe jumping to a conclusion but many w/o a lot of experience with these will find an issue if/when the base pin is not fully and properly installed.
Be it a cataloged model or one of the distributor models, they all go through the same assembly line and unless the specs on the contract specify otherwise, they'll all of the same quality control.

| Sometimes you wonder though.... One of my flattops had a 'raised' loading gate. As you rotated the cylinder a case would 'push' open the loading gate and lock up the cylinder from turning any further.... Now how did that get thru QA? Luckily this was on my stainless convertible and I got some Emory cloth and went to work. After plenty of elbow grease, I was in business.... Go figure!
