I have two six-shooters:
GP100 loaded with Hornady Critical Defense .357 in an unlocked gun case under my side of the bed, with 3 additional Hornady loaded speedloaders and 50 extra rounds of 158 gr .357s.
6 shot 20ga in the closet with a case (250 rounds) of buckshot.
Not that I should ever need that much ammo, but I have it in the house anyway, so why not.

Not a six shooter, my nightstand guns are a D.W. 1911 45 ACP with 8+1 hydrashoks and a spare mag It also has excellent Night Sights yellow front green rear, then theres the S&W 6906 with 12 rounds hydrashoks and an extra mag, plus a 12 Ga. pump in the closet mounted high loaded with 2 birdshot and 3 #4 buck.

My 5 shooter Sp101 357 3" barrel is right next to me on the bottom of the night stand, backed up with my 12ga shotgun under the bed.

I took my Old Army out yesterday and put 45 rounds of Cowboy ,45 LC, and other than filling the house with smoke, I think that it can handle the job of dropping an invader.

Right now my P95 sits on the night stand, but soon it will be a GP100 sitting there waiting for some BG to come rolling in...then he will have me pointing a 357 at him and my wife brandishing the 9mm with the barrel pointing in his direction.

Got my FNX-40 in my Crossbreed Ohai Bedside Backup each night. Put it back in the pistol safe every morning before heading off to work. Plus have the Mossberg 12-guage pump right beside the bed also.

I keep all my guns handy at night...and during the day. I have not kids living with me and my wife is a great shot. I am not a collector and can use every weapon I have. So, considering that the best weapon one can have it the weapon he has when he needs it, why not keep them all available?

Mine is a five-shooter too. A Stainless Model 36 Chief's Special in .38 Special. I would probably use my Model 10 with the 2in. barrel, but this is the humid deep south and the latter revolver is blued. I also keep a Mossberg Model 500 with the 18in barrel loaded with 00 Buck about two feet away.

Keep them loaded and handy. When kids are coming, lock them up.

On the bed stand a LC9 with defensive loads next to a little Olight set on strobe (damn near instantly blinds you) and a 12 gauge seconds away.
