Just ordered a New Vaquero .45 Convertible

Hello all,

I just ordered my first single action revolver. I ordered a polished stainless New Vaquero with 5.5" barrel with .45LC and .45ACP cylinders. I'm hoping I can pick it up at Buds before the end of the week. I can't wait!

After reading through the forums, it seems that shipping the cylinders off to Cylinder Smith would be a good idea. I've also ordered a set of pearl grip panels for it. Also, through reading the forums, I'm not convinced that the Power Custom "Colt conversion" is all that necessary. I believe I'll just stick with the Poor Boy's Trigger Job, and perhaps the lighter Wolff spring kit. Are there any other "must-haves" for the New Vaquero, such as shims, etc.?

If it matters, I shoot semiautos a lot, and was issued a semi for work. The Vaquero is simply for fun plinking. Being a "cowboy" type gun, I just HAD to get the .45 version.

Any other recommendations? Perhaps the 11 degree forcing cone mod?

Thanks,
Brad

I would wait until you get the new revolver before deciding it needs the cylinders reamed. The scuttlebutt is that the Vaquero Convertibles are coming through with good dimensions.

My SS Bisley Convertible DID need both cylinders reamed but hopefully your New Vaquero will not need it. If the throats are undersized, of course, then I DO recommend that you have them corrected.

I just got a 45/ 45 Bisley stainless 5=1/2 barrel last week. I measured the cylinders and everything looked good. I loaded up some 250 gr Missouri bullets and for the ACP cylinder some 200 gr Missouri bullets. I have had no problems with leading and both cylinders were very accurate. Shoot it first. The revolvers coming from Davidson Dis. and Lipsey are fine revolvers .

Brad Welcome to the forum.
I think you are going to like that Ruger New Vaquero.

I'd like to share a tip for anyone who has a SA in .45 ACP. I have a friend who has a Ruger SA in .45 ACP & he carries spare ammo in a 1911 magazine. 7 rounds fit right in his hip pocket & he can just thumb them into his gun.
Now if only I had a SA in .45ACP myself.

Thanks gents. I picked it up yesterday. Man, what a sweet shooter. I've only fired 45 ACP so far, but I just got some cowboy loads from Wally World. I can't wait till I get my pearl grips!

Congratulations Brad!
I know you are going to enjoy that .45 Ruger. Rugers are great guns.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who would enjoy seeing a range report when you get time.
Good shooting.

Love my SS NM Vaquero in 45 Convertible. It's a tack driver wit either cylinder.
