Blackhawk .45 Convertible

I like the looks of this gun and really like the idea of two different rounds. Will this model handle heavy .45 Colt loads? I have read about midsize farmes versus large frames and that midsize frames won't handle the hotter loads. Which frame is this gun?

Which one are you talking about . There is the .45 flattop medium frame convertible from Lipseys that will NOT handle Ruger Only Loads. Then there is the standard .45 Convertible Large frame which will. So which one are you talking about?

I have both a new model and a Lipsey's flat top convertible in 45. The new model can handle ruger only loads and the flat top can not.

The model that you linked is the New Model Blackhawk and it has the same frame and cylinders as the 44 Magnum. The cylinder walls are thinner than the 44 Mag because of the larger case but it can fire any "Ruger Only" load you find in a reloading manual and can handle all the +P loads from ammunition manufacturers.

As the 'punkinlobber' says ... the link it to the cataloged .45 LARGE frame Convertible.

The medium frame flattop .45 Convertible is easily distinquished by it's 'obvious' flattop ...

If you're interested in satin stainless, I stumbled across (and bought) a Distributor's Exclusive that is not listed @ Ruger.com, but is similar to this Williams gun.

It's a New Model Blackhawk, Bisley grip frame with black laminate grips, 45LC/45ACP in brushed stainless, 5 1/2 " barrel, pinned front sight, adjustable rear sight. The ACP cylinder is fluted and the LC cylinder is roll-marked with the usual Bisley graphics.

Catalog is: KRBN-455WX
Model: 00472

see: here

edit: According to Ruger: "This particular model is an active Williams Distributors exclusive, model #0472, that indeed is not on the website. This gun started shipping on July 24th of this year". My gun was test fired 20 Jul 12.

That's a nice gun Pell. How much does one like that go for and where did you get it?

Bought it 13 Aug 12 @ my LGS. Actually went there to buy the std BH 45 convertible. My son noticed this one and brought it to my attention.

Based on the usual markup @ my LGS, I would guess MSRP is about $700. Your retail would depend on your LGS's pricing policy.

I've edited the above post to note that it's a Williams exclusive, so, if your LGS has a relationship with Williams, they could order one for you.

I thought the OP's original question was about large frame vs. the mid size frame...and the link shown was for a blued Blackhawk (not a flat top)...guess I missed a post or something...The stainless guns shown appear to be distributor "specials"....my Lipsey's 44 Blackhawk flat top (my avitar picture) is a mid frame gun that will not handle the Ruger only loads and the same gun in stainless (don' t know if they made them then won't either. I dunno .

I just latched on to the first picture I ran across to show what a medium frame'flattop' looks like compared to the large frame BH that has 'sight ears' the OP was looking at as a FYI. I am a blued gun man myself . Much prefer blued when possible. Sorry I opened the SS can of worms.... I think the OP's question has been answered.

So is the Bisely convertible .45 like this one a large frame?

The gun described @ Post 7 is a large frame gun that will handle "Ruger only" loads.

The gun described by weldernewt in post #11 looks a little bit different than the one described by pell in post #7. Is the one in post #11 a flat top model? It doesn't appear to have the raised area on top of the frame in front of the rear sight.

Is the gun in post #11 the same as this one, only with an extra cylinder?
Ruger® New Model Blackhawk® Distributor Exclusives Single-Action Revolver Model 0470

Is this a flat top, or will it handle heavy Colt loads?
