The Quest

So I've been kicking around trying to tune my own revolvers and such the last couple of months. Firelapping and careful load development coupled with power custom triggers and oversized cylinder latches has yielded some very acceptable results (3 inch groups at 50 yds). Recently I've had the great fortune of getting both the 5 1/2 and 4 5/8 bisley flat tops in 44 special and a standard 4 5/8 flat top blackhawk in 44 special. My goal is to have each one of them modified and optimized by three of the best single action shops in the country. So the 5 1/2 Bisley is heading to Jim Stroh for his magic. Clements custom is getting the 4 5/8 inch Bisley and Bowen classic arms is going to work on the blackhawk flat top. I spoken in depth with all three of these smiths and all I can say is wow! They are super nice to deal with and all of them have given me solutions to the work I wanted done. One of the three actually slowed down my lofty plans and advised he could do exactly what I wanted at a much reduced cost. Although the waiting list is long I'll keep everyone posted when the work starts and how it ends.

Congratulations on your 3 recent acquisitions. Those are 3 sweet revolvers.

I will look forward to your future posts regarding the progress of the custom work these 3 smiths will be performing and, of course, how each one turns out. I'll be interested too in the practical results of your project.

To be honest I'm not expecting a whole lot more accuracy out of the guns. At some point it just comes down to how skilled I can be the the weapon. One of the Bisley's has already been firelapped and all I can say is it worked for me. The pistol shoots much better and it cleans much easier. With that said if you are like me and started out shooting cast bullets without much help along the way some loads are just not a good match and will lead even the smoothest barrel. But I'm learning the ropes as I go and now can most of the time avoid those nice bore coating smears of lead.

Asking questions and viewing the work of other's is a big plus in project planning. Some aspects of firearms tinkering and gunsmithing are a no brainer to me and I enjoy doing them. Other aspect's that require tool's or equipment I don't currently have are thing's that I steer clear of altogether. I will say though that simple action work and bore lapping are really basic as long as you go slow and take your time. As for your Bisley's, good for you, those are fine revolvers.
