New Bearcat owner

Been kicking myself for heading out on my daily walk with the dogs without any kind of gun, mostly because I don't want the hassle and weight of carrying my GP or 1911. Sooner or later, I know I'll regret not having something, even a 22. I figured better a 22 than no gun at all, but it would have to be a very small and very lightweight 22 or I'd be tempted to leave it behind, same as always.

So, just made a trip to my LGS and they just happened to have a New Bearcat in blue and this Bearcat just happened to have one of the best triggers I've ever seen on a SA revolver and this Bearcat just happened to have a super blue job and this Bearcat locked up as tight as my Single Ten and, well, I couldn't resist.

I know, I know, I'm always very fussy about accuracy, being mostly a range shooter, but I've got the accuracy covered seven ways to Sunday with my other Ruger pistols and revolvers. Time for a gun to shoot for fun or use at point blank range if and when I need something for protection. Time for a gun that is superbly built. Time for a gun that is different and unique. Time for a new Bearcat.

Have to wait till Monday, though, to pick it up.

Congrats, The Bearcats are sweet little guns.

I've been thinking about getting a new model Bearcat. I have a unfired Old Model Super Bearcat and I want to keep it that way. I'm sure if I buy one I'll get to shoot it a time or two until the wife takes it from me.End of the story.

I must have walked past a million Bearcats at various gun shows over the years and never gave them a second glance...then suddenly one day I got to thinking about how much fun an all blued steel one might be to own.

Go figure.

Something tells me you'll be trying to wring all of the accuracy out of it you can get!

Have to wait 'til Mon. huh?

My Single Six has been at Magnaport so long, I've forgotten when I sent it.

Seriously though, I hope you enjoy your new Ruger!

PICTURES & RANGE REPORTS!

Pictures and range report guaranteed, next week. Here in Wisconsin, we have to wait 48 hours on a handgun purchase. Guess that gives us time to round up ammo.

Never have seen a lot them around, either. Just my luck one was on the counter waiting for me.

Congrats on that new Bearcat. I like 'em just a liitle bit myself!........

For those that "can't find one", Gallery Of Guns is right now showing 34 stainless and 17 blued ones in stock. That is where I got my two. Good price, comes to your LGS in two days, and the Davidson's lifetime guarantee.

My two are dead center on windage, and about two inches low at 25 yards. I'll never file the sight, I just adjust my sight picture for whatever distance.

You're welcome. At the time I got mine, they were about the only place I could get them.

EWK Arms' ejector housings, to replace the factory aluminum, made my Bearcats perfect. I just checked the website, and he is sold out of both stainless and blued steel. Usually doesn't take him long to make more, though.

Hamilton Bowen also makes them. A bit more pricey, but with his reputation I would assume they are excellent, too. He also has them that that fit evenly with the end of the barrel.

While the Bearcat looks like a cool gun wouldn’t something like the LCR in .22 made more sense for carry? Much smaller and lighter, and double action. Maybe I’m out to lunch, but a SA wouldn’t be my choice to carry on walks around town.

I have one of the original ones. It iis light, easy to carry and surprisingly accurate. I paid $49.50 for mine, around 1964.......Robin

You're right about a double action being more practical for self-defense and CCW work. Won't argue with you there. This is a 99% a fun gun, though, that will be carried as trail gun and plinking gun and that may, just may, be called upon for self-defense, but two legged varmints are very rare up here. My neighbors all know each other and keep a watch on things. Most of us don't even lock our doors. Hard to believe, I know, but such places still exist.

When the bears are out and active in the spring, however, I do get serious about self-defense and carry my GP-100 with heavy loads. The rest of the year, just want to have a fun gun with me. Besides, I love single actions. That's a big part of the lure of the Bearcat, too. And, okay, I'm an old fuddy duddy. I just can't warm up to the idea of anything but wood and metal on my guns. Can't fault the plastic stuff at all. Just not for me.

I can get away without locking my doors too. Went away for a weekend a few years ago and came home Sunday night to see my shop door open and the light on. The shop door is visible from the street, and my dirt bike was plainly visible. Nothing missing. Just me having a brain fart before leaving.

Everyone has fun guns. Most of mine are, tho my carry gun is not much fun to shoot. It’s all business. I got away from shooting for a good part of my life, and got back into it hot and heavy about 5 years ago. I was then very much a wood and blued metal guy, but I now own just about everything. Wood/metal or plastic, it’s all good. I just love the precision work that goes into making a firearm and the sound they make when racking the action on a semi-auto, but not much beats the sound you get when handling a well made Single Action. Recently bought my first SA, a Ruger Single Six in .17 HMR (Avatar) and am looking to pick up a Blackhawk in .357 or possibly .357/9mm conversion. Looking forward to photos of your Bearcat.

Bearcatter, all your posting on Bearcats came to mind when I saw that little jewel in the gun store, yesterday. Just want to say, thanks. I know I'll love my Bearcat.

BRL, you are so right about me trying to squeeze every bit of accuracy out of that Bearcat. I'll have to try to keep things in perspective, given the old time sights and tiny size of the Bearcat. Might be good for me to lighten up a bit and try shooting the way folks shot way back when with those old single actions. Let the fun begin as soon as I can get that little 22 in my hot little hands.

Wingspar, glad to know you live in such an area, too. I'm also an old time shooter that has gotten back into shooting in a big way, now that I'm living back in God's country, again. Life is good, up here in my north woods, but Oregon is also part of paradise. Been there, too.
