Archiving a Vaquero for Great Grandson

Just purchased a brand new Blued & Engraved 357 Vaquero SA with white grips. This Ruger looks really nice, in new unfired condition!

I purchased this with the intent of preserving this Ruger for something like 50 years till my grandson has a child that comes of age.

Like some advice on archiving a firearm for the future. What documentation needs to be achieved and kept with it? Contact Ruger and ask for what? Sales litature to include? How do you prepare the surfaces with what products to keep them perfect over time? Should I use a food shrink wrapper to evack the air out of the original box with the Vaquero and paperwork in it?

Looking forward to your input on this gift for the future.

Oh, my grandson is 1 year old, so I imagine photos of him, myself and my son with this pistol in the package might be cool too.

Sorry I have no advice but, I must say that is a wonderful idea. What a story that will be years down the road.

I would put it in a bank safety deposit box the air is climate controlled and very safe. I would then add your son onto the box as an authorized person on the box and leave a note about the gun in your will.

As I remember in my CCW class, one can not take a firearm into a bank.

Nice idea if I could prepay a deposit box for 50 years. Then again Gietner would probably close the bank and have me and my son arrested.

Putting it into my will sound 101% important, had not thought about that.

Kind of meaning less buying a gun for just that purpose, would mean more if it were a old gun you owed and used for hunting or something, and had hunting and shooting stories to go with it about your great adventures.

There are many guns to fill that slot.

I know with my heart issues I may not be there to see a great grandson grow and live life fully. A loving special gift Just For Him I am betting will leave an enduring piece of love and family for one to come.

Would you be amazed if you opened such a gift from you great grandfather?

If it were for for example a old Winchester my gramps hunted with of fought indains or something, if it were new and untouched it would be meaning less cause it wouldn't really be part of him and something that was part of his life.

I am suprised how manty replies are against my setting a brand new revolver aside for a great grandson. So back to the OP, what items should I include in the time capsul and has anyone have experience with long term lube to keep it safe?

Thank you. This looks like it is some good stuff. I will probably order some and see how it works.

I will write Ruger this week for documintation on the Vaquero by the serial number and ask for any marketing materials they may have to include in the box.

Was thinking of putting all of it in a Pelican case. They seem to have a good O-ring seal. One other option is a pvc pipe and caps. Since I do not plan to dig a hole, I should also consider a fine presentation box. That might be the more classy deal.

Very nice gift...but have ya considered your 1 year old grandson might not bear a son, might have twins or daughters..or not desire kids at all? Your money to do with as you wish but I think I would Will it to the one who is actually here now and hopefully will know you. I never knew any of my Great Grandparents..but I cherish the 1905 Colt Army Special that was left for me by my maternal Grandfather who passed away when I was very young. It means a grest deal to me, had it been handed down through generations I still would keep it but it would not mean as much as being handed down to me from someone I knew.

Despite all the comments above, I think it is a great idea. It is what you want that is important.
Sorry, I can be of little help with your long term storage requirements.
