| Redhawk/Hunter 44 mag compared
Pards ...my son in law shot my Leopold scoped 7.5" Super Blackhawk in 44mag the last time he was up from Texas ...loved it evidently ...anyway while in a lgs in Texas he came across a Redhawk priced pretty "salty" [low] ...and since he wants to move easily from iron to scope and back to Iron [not necessarily in the field]he checked off from the SBH to the Hunter ...anyway his question to me was how do the RH and Hunter compare with heavy loads in recoil mangement. I have never fired an RH so I cannot compare them for him. So hands on experience please step forward! Keep in mind this lad has large hands and is looking for a whitetail deer gun.

Handloader magazine had an article about loading (hotloads) for the Redhawk that they DID NOT recommend in an SBH. They indicated that the Redhawk was stronger.
I can't speak to their statement.

I own both.....a SBH Hunter in .45 Colt and a RH in .44 magnum.
The SBH has the typical single action muzzle rise, and the RH is more straight back. I've done so much big bore and magnum handgun shooting that recoil is not a big concern, but I guess I'd have to say the double action RH is less of a problem for those that may be recoil sensitive.

The RH is a heavier gun wich also helps with recoil. I do think the RH is also stronger.

I have shot both models and either one will be a fine hunting handgun. Recoil will be just a tad less felt in the Redhawk because it is heavier. A Super Redhawk would be even better than the Redhawk, and the 9" barrel models are pleasant to shoot.

Way back (and I do mean way back) in my younger days when I gradually worked my way up to shooting a 44 Mag for the sake of deer hunting, I tried both the SBH and SRH and, of the two, the SRH was more comfortable for me. Much preferred the looks of the SBH, but that old ugly SRH wasn't half so ugly after I started shooting it. |
