45 convertible flattop

Okay so I decided to go with the 45 convertible SS 4.63 barrel Flattop Lipsey's Exclusive. Never shot or reload for the 45 Colt. Is there anything special I need to know about loading for this caliber? I plan on using this as a woods gun while hiking and hunting. Any suggestions on a good powder and bullet combonation for this use.Where I hunt and hike at there are possible encounters with black bears, coyotoes and copperheads.
Thanks

Your gun while stronger than a colt or colt clone is not as strong as a regular blackhawk so you should not use the ruger only section in some manuals.

I just got the same gun a few weeks ago. I have been using 8grs.of Unique with a 255gr Keiths stlye Missouri bullet for the 45 colt. With the 45 ACP cylinder I use 3.8 grs of Bullseye and 200 swc Bullseye#1 12 Brinell. Both loads are accurate and I have little to no leading. I am trying to figure out what grips size to order. The 45 Colt hurts my hand a little.

We use the Missouri Cowboy #4 cowboy action bullet...I'm older with bad hands so need something a bit gentle...I load 6.4-6.5 grains of Trail Boss powder with a 200Grain Missouri RNFP...the Cowboy # 4 has a bin hardness of about 12 which never leads in my approx. 800 fps loads....kicks like a 38 special and deadly accurate....When I shoot Unique in the 45 Colt it really gets dirty unless I load pretty hot. I'm trying to get some of Missouri's Keith style in a softer lead hardness than their normal to shoot with softer loads with Trail Boss...

Lots of good combinations. I used to shoot exclusively Unique 8.5g as my load... Until I found IMR 4227 when reading some of Taffin's articles. I load 20g of 4227 under 255g SWC with CCI magnum primer. 13g of HS-6 is another good load (this is over SAMMI, but Brian Pearce shows it ok in his tables as it is a Tier 2 load) . YMMV. Then there is Green Dot, Red Dot, Power Pistol, Titegroup. Trail Boss 255g SWC and Trail Boss 250g RNFP is good when not looking for thumpers.

8 grains of Unique and Lee 255 grain, either RNFP or SWC, seems to work well for me in 45 Colt... Still looking for a soft shooting 200 grain load in 45 ACP. Light bullets shoot really low and I haven't wanted to cut the front sight yet... Really love this gun!!!
