When it comes to SA's and bolt action rifles, I think some of the enjoyment might be comparing a manual transmission in a car to one with an automatic. Yeah, they both work, but you're more "one with the car" with a stick. I'm thinking there's a little of this going on with SA's and bolt action rifles. Plus, it takes more involvement from the shooter so they get to touch, fondle and play with their gun a little more.

Just guessin'...

In my opinion, there is a big difference between a gun for practicality and a gun for fun. For concealed carry and in the bedside table, I prefer my Ruger SR9C. I prefer it to any DA revolver because I can get at least ten rounds off before I have to reach for another magazine. Is it a fun gun to shoot? Not particularly. It does the job perfectly well.

For fun, I'll take any of my three Ruger SAs. It's especially fun when a 20-something shows up at the range with his nickel-plated 1911 and can't get half his shots inside the 7. I take out my Vaquero and get them all inside the 9; scratch my grey beard and smile! Now that's fun!

I love my SA, although all my other guns are DA. It's the cowboy in me. It was really cool to make my own western rig, put my Ruger Vaquero in the holster and go to the range to try to quick draw without shooting my foot. I had a bad experience in Viet Nam with a 1911 that didn't work when I needed it and, so, I have long prefered revolvers because the second shot is sure. Also, I am more accurate shooting targets with a DA using SA and, so the Vaquero is not that much different.
Besides, how cool it is to strap on a 2 1/2 wide belt with 18 rounds in the loops and a ranger buckle, put 5.5 inches of barrel in a low slung holster after spinning the cylinder and saddle up?

I have three S/A's in my "arsenal", two of them are Rugers, (Blackhawk in a .45 Colt and a Single Six). The other is a Intercontinental Arms Dakota in .45 Colt also, which I bought back in 1970. I love these guns. They have a natural feel with handling and aiming. They shoot where you point 'em. They're simple, reliable, and just too cool. There's about an old Frontier Canon that I have'nt felt with others handguns.
