| NIB 1999 Bisley Vaquero in 45 Colt - Questions
Found it at a small local gun show, a NIB Bisley Vaquero in 45 Colt. I bought it cuz the price was sweet - now I'm trying to learn more about my purchase. No regrets though. No "buyer's remorse".
It's from 1999 per Ruger's site. Not a New Vaquero - just Vaquero.
One - I want to shoot it, any reason why I shouldn't? It came with box and papers. You know that whole NIB thing and collectors.
Two - Is the case hardening real or that fake stuff from later days? I think it's real from what I've read on this site.
Three - I bought some 454 lead cast bullets for reloading before doing any research. They are really tight at the end of the cylinder. Think I can shoot them through this Ruger?
Four - Thanks for this board and your replies.

iirc the early case hardening is a chemical finish.make sure you oil the gun down after handling or it will start to rust.

Congratulations on your Bisley Vaquero, they are very nice guns. I also think they are a chemical finish for the CCH & it will wear. I kind of like it because in about two years, if you use it a lot, it will develop the 100 year old look of a Colt. I'd oil it after use & not worry about it.
There is NO reason not to shoot your gun. I think you will find it pleasant to shoot especially with std .45 Colt loads, You will also find it to be accurate. The Bisley gripframe handles recoil very well for me.
I don't think you would encounter any problems shooting the .454 diameter bullets. If possible mike the chamber mouths & see what they are then order or size bullets according to the size of your chambers.
I think the Bisley Vaquero is the larger Blackhawk size frame & they are very strong. They are larger than the later New Vaquero. The New Vaquero should not be used with the Ruger Only loads we see in the loading manuals. I'd stay with standard loads (Colt level loads) in the New Vaquero.
Good shooting, I think you've got a good one there.
