5 1/2" .
Never have handgun hunted.
All throats in all four of my .45s were undersized. Not anymore . Newer ones are better though ... but mine were not quite there.

Haven't found one myself.
If you plan to hunt with your handgun, or will shoot mostly target or silhouette, get a long barrel. If you want a backpacking friend, go short and portable. Everything else is a balance, but tube length has some minimum requirements in many states, so keep that in mind.
I do all my short range hunting with a bow, so my handguns are mostly short barrel guns.

I have a Blackhawk 45LC with a 7.5 inch barrel.
It will put all six rounds of a 255gr SWC with 7.5 grains of Unique load, into one "big" ragged hole at 25 yards.
I don't know about the cylinder throats, but I'm not changing anything.

I have a 7 1/2 barrel, I prefer longer barrels, except on a pocket pistol, but then I'm not going to try to conceal a a .45 single action. My Blackhawk is a 1977 manufacture, and unlike most of thew ones, my throats at .454. Back in '77 all the factory ammo was .454, 255 gr. lead, so the throats were sized to fit. My best performance comes from cramming .454 bullets down my .451 barrel - it sure does seal the gas behind the bullet.

| Barrel length
I like 4-5/8" best followed by 5-1/2" I yhave no use for longer and have gotten rid of them. I hunt on once in a while and can hit with sufficent accurcy out to 40 yards or so. I consider all in a 6" plate with room to spare OK for me at my age 67 with failing eyes.

I recently bought a 7 1/2" New Model Blackhawk in 45 LC to hunt with. This fall will be my first attempt with a hand gun for deer so I don't really have any experience, but I bought the longer barrel because I've always been told that they work better for hunting. I guess I'll find out the hard way and if I'm wrong it gives me an excuse to buy another one.
