Darn! I was hoping someone would reply...
At that length, looking at the ballistics on the Buffalobore website, it looks like it would 'cost' around 60-75 fps over the 4 5/8 barrel in 44 mag. In 44 special, the loss would be almost unmeasurable.
In my S&W and Alaskan, I tend to shoot 44 specials and some full power 44 magnum. I don't own any handguns with a barrel over 4 inches, and I don't hunt, so this gun seemed pretty reasonable - although I don't know if I want to pay a little extra for it.

Bought one a couple of weeks ago. I really like it, very handy. Only shot it a few times thru my chrony. Don't remember it shooting high but I do lose around 100 fps compared to my 5 1/2 " SBH. That's with loads of 8.5 and 9.0 grains of Unique over a 250 Keith from Magnus Bullets. I'm keeping mine.

When I decided to buy a 44M, I checked the Talo out, and it was considered...I bought the SBH with the 4 5/8" barrel instead...I like it, I'm certainly going to keep it! yet it is a nasty little brute when stoked with magnum loads. If I were to buy another I think I'd go with slightly a longer barrel, like a 5 1/2".

The 3.75" barrel makes a lot of sense for portability, the 7.5" is for hunting. My 5.5" was the shortest available when I bought it, and I'm looking for someone to turn it into a 3.75" backpacking buddy.

Murph, I'm wrestling with the same decision. I asked a similar question on another forum and got crickets. This TALO looks so fantastic though with the short barrel, unfluted cylinder and dark grips. I'm typically partial to blued or parkerized finishes, but the SS is sweet. To me the muzzle velocity loss is an acceptable trade for the shorter barrel length. I was originally thinking of getting an Alaskan .44 mag, but I already have a short barrel S&W SA/DA and no single actions yet.
The price is a little higher than I was planning to spend right now, but if I can get one shipped to my FFL for under $600 I think I'll pull the trigger (as they say ). Hopefully I can still find one. I think the factory short barreled guns are rare so I would hope it would hold its value well.

I've looked at it...I like the 4 5/8" length better...
Dunno why, but that seems to be the 'correct' length for me, carry-wise, and aesthetically...
I do have a full size old-school SBH, but for some odd reason I want a shorter one too
KS-458N is on my short list...

Can anyone with the SBH Talo version say if it has the 1/2 cock hammer for easier loading/unloading? Similar to "Old Model" SBH.
I know the Talo is a "New Model" SBH, but I've read that this was added back on the "New Model" Vaqueros.

Are the fired casing hard to remove. I was told on another forum that this might be a problem. I say it might be a problem after you have fired a bunch of 44spl then shot mags but need to know if mags are hard to remove after fired in the Talo. Thanks Quote:

For a round or two this is O.K. but if you shoot several hundred rounds at a range session, it gets tedious.
(I'm not implying longer barrels are any easier, the ejector doesn't get any longer, unless you get one of those silhouette models with the long ejector.)

opinions please and thanks

opinions please and thanks | This has come up a couple of times on various forums...and I responded.
I bought a used custom Original Size VAQUERO in 44 magnum last fall for $350 out the door....cut to 3.5 inches; magna-ported; recessed muzzle crown a la magna-port; super total blue job like an Old Model SUPER BLACK HAWK. I'd estimate at least $600 worth of custom work plus the gun worth $500 maybe.
The base pin had been altered to a Sheriff's Model type to maximize ejector rod travel, BUT less than 1/2inch of casing is pushed out. IF it had dirty chambers, a split casing or a hot load fired in it, ejection would be a PITA IF you could do it all. I load mid range at about 1000 FPS for 240-to-275 grain boolits. The standard ejector rod length isn't that great...the shorties are worse. AND you have to remove the ejector rod assembly to get the cylinder out for cleaning.
All this said, I'd like to duplicate my little prize in stainless without the magna-porting. Lots of style points at a Cowboy Action shoot. AND there's not a lot of on-the-clock reloading in Cowboy Action.
