Picked up two guns at the gun show in West Bend, Wis. yesterday. The first is a new Ruger Bisley Blackhawk 5.5" in .44 Special from Lipsey's. The .44 Special is my pet caliber. This makes 4 of them in my collection including two Vaqueros and a Rossi Model 720 with 3" barrel. The second is a used Super Blackkhawk .44 Magnum. It will be sent off to Mag-Na-Port to be ported and have the barrel cut to 5.5" and crowned.
Don't like Mag-na-porting? I'd like to hear more, please. Over the years I've shot a ton of .44 mag through SBH with 7.5" bbl. and some through a S&W Model 29, which I disliked. I want a shorter, easier to handle .44 Mag. but want to reduce the recoil some.
Shoot a lighter load. Get some custom grips. In my opinion it will cut the resale ability and it defaces a good firearm. I am sure some people think mag-na-porting is great I just don't like adulterating a fine firearm. Granted I have never shot one that was mag-na-ported so I don't really know if it changes anything. And, I will not shoot one either. I am just kina that way. I am old school. Cutting the barrell to 5.5" is a great idea, I did it to mine. In fact if all guns had short barrels they would have more steel left over to make more guns with! Good luck
Fair enough. I respect your opinion and am an old schooler myself. I learned to shoot revolvers with one hand even out to 100 yards. The SBH is my all time favorite gun to shoot. I got this one for a pretty low price and am not really concerned with resale. As to shooting a lighter load? No way, Jose. I like my .44 Mags hot, 250 gr Keith bullet with 20+ gr. of 2400. I just cast up about 500 more last week.
I like that Bisley. I just took delivery of a New Vaquero .44 Spl, myself. Can you tell me if the grip on the New Vaquero Bisley is the same size as the original Vaquero?
Thanks.
No, it's much bigger. The New Vaquero grip is on the small side. The Bisley has the same frame but the grip is definitely longer and thicker. Very different feel too.
Sounds good then, let me know how you like it. My shoulder, arm and wrist are kinda worn out so I find it more comfortable to use a lighter load rather than altering the gun. Best of luck.
I have handled other brand Bisleys in the store and didn't like them much. Just didn't feel right in the hand. Then I had the opportunity to handle a Ruger belonging to one of our SASS shooters last fall and fell in love with it. I really like this new one. I still want to add a Ruger Blackhawk Flattop .44 Spl. to the collection though.
