Hi folks,
New to the forum. I just picked up a Super Blackhawk last week and love it. My first single action. Anyway, I noticed that there is some kind of crud,or some other organic looking material, showing where the barrel meets the frame. If I wipe it off today it's back tomorrow. It doesn't look like rust. It's dry. I know it's a weird one, but if it's rust I'll return the gun. Could it be some kind of thread dope from the barrel install?

Welcome Mate! Revolvers are not like other hand guns! That said there's a gap between the Barrel and the Chamber, usually around .006 in inches. When a round is fired gases bullet lube spent powder spews out in the gap between the chamber and the barrel I believe that is the crude you are seeing. Get some good solvent I use Hoppes a toothbrush and give it a good cleaning.

If it comes back without shooting may be residue from cleaning solvents. No thread dope on barell threads. BM

Welcome from northern Wyoming. That is probaly carbon from test firing at the factory. Clean it with solvent and a toothbrush. After you give it a good brushing leave the solvent for a few minutes to do the job. Use some clean rags to clean the residue. Remove the cylinder before cleaning.

There's nothing wrong with your Super. What you have are some Bluing Salts creeping out of the frame/barrel junction. I bought a 4 5/8" Super Blackhawk last week and it had the same crusty stuff exactly where yours is. I soaked mine with some Kroil and brushed it good with an old toothbrush, then applied more Kroil and let it soak overnight. It's not uncommom to see this stuff but most gun shops clean it off before the gun goes on display. I just happened to be in the shop when UPS delivered so I bought mine as soon as it was logged in. Keep an eye on it as it will cause rust. After enough oiling it will stop.

Best Regards,

I just picked up an old lever action that I had re-blued from the gun smith. I had the same stuff coming out between where the barrel mates with the receiver. My gun smith advised this is bluing salts working their way out. I just wiped it off with some gun oil and a rag. After doing this twice it stopped.
