SBH Trigger Guard

I notice the SBH have a trigger guard that is squared off in the back. Can someone give a description of how that feels when you shoot? Does it slam into a finger or ...?

Tater, Only the 7.5" and 10.5" SBHs have the squared back Dragoon style trigger guard. The 4 5/8" and 5 1/2" models have rounded trigger guards shaped exactly like BHs only made out of steel or stainless steel. My 7.5" SBH was a knuckle buster with 44 Mag loads and the Dragoon trigger guard, but then again, my 5 1/2" with the round trigger guard is just as bad. I solved the problem with a set of oversized grips that fit me like a glove and fill in the gap between the trigger guard and grip frame. So really it's more about how the grips fit you ... not about the trigger guard.

Here's my 7.5" SBH with the custom grips:

As Blackhawk73 said - Let the gun roll as it wants to and it's a non-issue.

I've now shot about 200 rds out my 3 week old BH & it has so far not hit my knuckles.
My last trip I made some especially heavy loads & it tipped up from the recoil, but didn't come straight back to hit my knuckles.

It feels fine...until the back of the trigger guard slaps your knuckle. A few years back I picked up a 200th year SBH with such a clean smooth action I just had to shoot it lots. The only problem is after every shooting session I had a bloody knuckle on my middle finger...still have a scar there. I wear it as a badge of honor, but with stock grips and a firm two-handed grip it will bust you.

I shoot 44mag Super Blackhawks, sometimes loaded up over the 1400fps mark with 300grn pills, and I've never had an issue with the trigger guard hitting my finger. Grip the gun firmly and it won't rap you. For reference, I wear a size 13 wedding ring and extra large gloves.

That's out of a 8.275" barrel too, not out of a 10.5" SBH.

Compound that with the opportunity to seat your bullets long in a Ruger SBH, and you gain ground. A Ruger SBH cylinder is typically in the 1.70" ballpark, and that COAL includes ~60thou of rim thickness, meaning 1.540" depth in the chamber. The 300XTP has a long straight shank bearing surface, so it might look dumb, but you don't HAVE to seat to the cannelure. Even without hanging out into the B/C gap, you can get 1.76" COAL in an SBH, which helps 1) fit more powder, 2) reduce chamber pressure a little.

AND... The Hornady data for that bullet shows 20.1grn of H110, not just 19.0. So you're talking over 5% loaded on top of that Hodgdon data before they max out.

Not making this stuff up folks (not saying it's 100% safe either, mind you) - but guys load a lot of pepper into SBH's...

I have had one for a while and at first I noticed it would hit my finger a little.
After some time shooting it I must have figured out how to hold it, I never even give it a thought. I have made no changes, grips are stock and I love how the gun shoots.
