Am I "wasting" my early Vaquero

I keep all .45 Colt reloads to the old 14,000 psi SAAMI limit. That way high-pressure loads can't find their way into an older, weaker pistol or levergun by accident. You know how Murphy can be.
There is a fine selection of .44 Mag firearms at this house if T-Rex or Sasquatch shows up.
Safety first!

Sounds like you bought yourself a present.

It will handle any SAAMI load just fine.

Rugers are stout, but any gun will wear faster with a hotter load.

To me, that design is not ideal for hunting. The sights limit it's use on longer shooting distances. It's more of a plinker and handy carry around the ranch gun.

At those distances standard loads are more than adequate to the task.

Could you guys enlighten me on what you mean by having the throats reamed?
In a cylinder, there is the chamber where you place the cartridge and the throat right ahead of the chamber. Therefore there are 6 throats. A .452 bullet should pass through the throats with simple finger pressure. For a more precise measurement you usually use pin gauges.

ngashooter will become famous soon enough
Congratulations to the OP on acquiring a "like-new" original Vaquero. I have two in .45Colt, and I love them. They are tremendous fun to shoot. I reload for both, but since they are not hunting guns I use standard loads pushing 250-255gr lead bullets about 850 or 900fps. I have no use for either the "mouse-fart" cowboy loads or fire breathing "Ruger Only" boomers. Standard pressure factory ammo my Vaqueros like for defensive use are Federal's 225gr LHP and Hornady's 225gr FTX. Please post some pics of your fine Ruger. Choosing grips and leather are great fun too!

Hey ngashooter, here's some pics for you. Dad had the holster already. Problem is, he's a little more svelte than I am.
