Retrofit reverse indexing pawl system

Have two NMBHs that I would prefer indexed on the loading gate like my New Vaquero and Flat Tops and Single Seven. Is that something Ruger would do, or are parts available for a gunsmith to do it? What answer should I expect when talking to Ruger?

at liberty, You can expect Ruger to say "NO". Yes, a good gunsmith can do it and here's what it involves: A dual diameter hole must be drilled in the frame's recoil shield. The larger of the two diameter holes gets tapped. A factory plunger and spring are then inserted into the hole with a factory threaded collar. The hole must be drilled in the perfect location or the cylinder's chambers won't align with the frame's loading channel. The concept is .... the spring loaded plunger will cam back in its hole when the cylinder is rotated clockwise. When the loading gate is open and you try to rotate the cylinder counter clockwise, the plunger will contact one of the ratchets and prevent the cylinder from rotating more. At this point, the loading gate will align with one of the chambers.

Here's a photo of a factory indexing plunger:

There is a much simpler solution and that is to modify the pawl so it will allow the cylinder to spin free in either direction when the loading gate is open, yet operate normally when the loading gate is closed. BTW, I have these in most of my NM Ruger SAs from a Single-Six to a Super Blackhawk. Here's a picture of the end of a modified "free spin" pawl.

It's a simple installation that any smith or anyone can do that can drill a hole and tap threads.

Needed is two drill sizes and a tap: basically drill one hole thru the hammer channel, counter drill the same hole with a smaller drill and tap threads in the counter drilled hole only. It helps to have a gun with it, to determine exact location to drill, hole sizes and depth.

You'll need to "free spin" the regular cyl pawl the 5 minute way described by Iowegan. Or purchase and install Ruger's or Power Customs free spin cyl pawl for another $30 or so.

ôReverse Indexing Pawl System" parts:

Names of parts, Ruger Part #s & Brownell Part #s (about $15 total)

Ejector/chamber Alignment Pawl (not to be confused with the Cyl pawl)..........KMVQ04502 780-001-292ah
Cylinder rotation Stop Spring .................................................. .................KMVQ04500 780-001-293ah
Cylinder Rotation Alignment Pawl & Spring Retention Screw...........................KMVQ04501 780-001-294ah
Free spin cyl pawl* (for mid/large size frame only)........................................KMVQ0 0701 780-001-296WB
*must modify existing pawl or use Power Custom pawl for single six frame size.

If you choose to use a Ruger free spin pawl, it's more work. Here's how I cut the divot above the trigger guard. Use a thin cut-off blade in a Dremel tool. With grip frame in a vice, and your old grip frame nearby for reference, hold the Dremel with two hands for control. And replicate the divot in the new grip frame. Be cautious not to let the cut extend to the outside edge of the trigger guard strap or it will show when assembled. You can also clamp the Dremel tool in the vice at an angle and hold the trigger guard strap instead.

10 ring precison will do it though a good general purpose gunsmith can do it htough they are getting scarce.
