Question Defective New Vaquero 45LC

Hello,

I just picked up my New Vaquero .45 Colt and noted that loading it seems to be problematic. The first three rounds load fine, the fourth needs a little bit of a push and the fifth and sixth are impossible. Now, this only happens if I rotate the cylinder until it clicks. If I rotate just a little and stop before it clicks, I can load all 6 cylinders just fine. So my question is, is this normal or do I need to send the gun back to Ruger? The gun does fire OK but for what this gun costs, it seems like it should be better quality than this.

Thanks,

Sounds like you have an original Vaquero. Does it have a XX-YYYYY serial #? Not a defect as all Rugers load this way with a few exceptions. If you hear the click, you went to far.

Now the exceptions for the New Model RUGER revolvers. The New Vaquero (XXX-YYYYY) and the NM Flattops have been changed (an indexing pawl) so when you hear the click, you can load. If this is the case, then, yes, you have a defective New Vaquero which needs to be sent back to Ruger.

I'm certainly no Iowegan - nor will I ever be - but sounds to me like your Ruger has tight headspace. The cylinder rotates fine until the first round, or so, tries to rotate past the recoil shield, then it hangs up. Take one empty case and load it, then rotate the cylinder until the case is in front of the firing pin. Pointing the revolver down, you should be able to see a sliver of light/space between the case and the recoil shield. I suspect you won't be able to see any light - or that the barrel/cylinder gap in the front is too tight.

In either case, rclark is right - it needs to go back to Ruger.

I had issues with mine until I broke it in AND got used to it. When I load, I spin until it clicks, then spin it back until it stops to slip the cartridge in. Two cylinders were also a bit tight when spinning it manually. I was having ejection issues too, but after the first 250 rounds everything flowed in and out as it should.

Thanks all..sounds like I need to put a few more rounds through it before I send it back. This is somewhat disappointing quality from Ruger..

Regie101,

Welcome to the forum.

You need to be more specific than this:
"the fourth needs a little bit of a push and the fifth and sixth are impossible."

What does that mean it can describe 3 different problems:
You need to push the cyl around?
Push the cartridges thru the loading trough?
Or push them into the chambers??
