New Model replacement grips.

I ran a search but could not find anything concrete on this . I purchased a new model Blackhawk in .45LC with 4 5/8 barrel . I hate the grip panels in black plastic . I am having trouble finding replacements for the new model with the internal lock made after 2007 . The nice lady at Ruger told me grips for older Blackhawks will not fit . Any help with aftermarket grips that will fit would be appreciated .

All that's really needed is a bit of relief on the inner side of the panels I believe. There's a LOT of choices depending on what you want and how nice you want 'em to be.

I normally go with Klamath River Woodworks or our own 41 magnum but CaryC is Tops as well. PvtShultz makes nice ones too.

Thanks for the info guys . The lady at Ruger said something about the New Model Blackhawk having pins instead of three screws . And then I couldn't find anyone making grips specificaly for the New Model . I won't sweat it so much and check out your sugestions .

Brettov: I just ordered the Hogue Rubber Monogrip for my 45 Colt New Model Blackhawk. Love the gun but not a fan of the stock wood grips. Just could not get comfortable with the hold of those stock grips. Lots of good reviews on the Hogue grips. They are not pretty but according to people I've talked to they function well. My price from Brownells was $17.49; I get a small discount by holding an FFL.

What she told you is complete BS.........Any XR3-RED grip from a New Model, and maybe an old model too, will fit. The grip frame itself is .5 inch thick, which is wider than the lock. I have several sets of older Ruger grips that fit nicely on XR3-RED grip frames with locks.

This is a picture of a Single Six with an XR3-RED Grip frame that has an internal lock. The grips are from an older New Model XR3-RED Grip Frame on a short barrel Super Blackhawk.

They do not need to be relieved for the lock

I just received my new grips for my Vaquero (old style) XR3 Red's from Custom Pistol Grips and Kits - CollinsCraftGrips they look great and fit perfectly. I had a hard time finding a manufacturer, they all stated nothing was available. Email's with Don (originally he stated he was not sure which grips would work) finally lead to an inquiry to Ruger. Sent Don My original grips and the info from Ruger. I now have a great pair of white oversized grips. Give Don a try.

I've also heard of people from Ruger actually giving that info as well. It's kind of hard to believe that the people from Ruger do not know what grips will fit their own guns.

The newly brought back steel copy of the old XR3 grip frame introduced in 2005 has the lock in it. The original XR3 grip frame was 1/2" in width. But Ruger in all their wisdom decided to make their new steel copy only 7/16" in width. The locks are wider than that. The molded plastic grips are no problem because they are concave in the back anyway. Wooden grips need to be recessed in the back to clear the locks. The pic below shows the recess in my grips.

When they started putting the locks in the XR3-RED Blackhawk frames, they did not change anything else, just modified it to accept the lock. Since the frame is still 1/2" in width, the lock does not interfere with the grips. I had heard that someone making wood grips for these was also putting a recess in the backs for the locks even though it was not needed. Maybe that is where the rumor comes from that original Blackhawk grips will not fit the new Blackhawk with the locks. But it is just that....a rumor. They will fit just fine.

The following paragraph comes right from Ruger's website concerning a pair of fake ivory single six grips. The ad states "old style". The paragraph states that they will fit the Blackhawk but then states that they will not fit guns with locks installed. I have had people send me new XR3-RED frames with locks in them for fitting grips and they will take the standard Blackhawk grips. Ruger is very misleading in what they are saying. What that ad should say is that they will not fit the XR3 style frames with internal locks.

Simulated ivory grips made by HogueŽ for the RugerŽ New Model Single Six, New Model Blackhawk, Vaquero, New Model Super Blackhawk with round trigger guard & Old Army. (Not for the New Vaquero, 50th Anniversary Blackhawk, Bisley, Bird’s Head Vaquero or Hunter models). Does not fit models with internal lock.

I'm chalking this one up as a "failure to communicate" at Ruger Corp. In other words the engineering dept. never told the sales dept. that the "New XR3" grip frames with the locks. were only 7/16" in width so that is why wooden grips needed the recess for the locks. So the sales dept. just assumed and apparently are still assuming that all the frames with the locks need recesses in the back of wood or the fake ivory grips.

Just spotted your last. Ruger got back with me this morning, and my hard rubber grips are on their way. Don't know how to p.m.on this site;never seemed a problem at Warrifles.com, I have some Ajax fake antler; I don' t like .they don't have the flaired taper SA 's should have .If you like soap grips(faux ivory)ruger has the best deal, with logo medalion. Which I may get 2 of yet! Have fun with the great American Ruger! Ric.
