The company that used to make grips for Ruger, Lott's I think, no longer makes them. At least that is the story I got. I found a pair of grips for the Vaquero and had to cut a little off the bottom. The single six had two different grip frames I think. Really got some different stories when I did a search for the grips. Have you tried a search on the internet?

Asphalt Man, Your Single-Six was made during the transition period where Ruger was converting from the old XR3 grip frame to the newer XR3 RED (Redesigned) grip frame. Likely it has the XR3 RED grip frame but an XR3 is possible. Before you buy grips, you must determine which grip frame you have because the grips are not interchangeable. Remove the grip panels and look on the left side of the grip frame casting. It will be stamped with either "XR3" or "XR3RED".

Most XR3 gripframes were shipped with black plastic grips, however walnut grips were also shipped as an option. Factory walnut XR3 grips are pretty scarce. The newer XR3RED grip frames had walnut grips and are much easier to find. Another good option is to have forum member caryc make you a set. He does some mighty fine work!

Below is a drawing that will show you the difference between the XR3 and the XR3-RED grip frames. It's very easy to tell the difference visually. Look at the back strap on the XR3-RED, see how it flares out towards the bottom? Now look at the back strap on the XR3. It is completely straight. A straight edge such as a ruler or scale will lay flat against it.

Then there is always the size in a three inch square that will tell you.

Ruger grips

Thanks guy's for your help. Yes it is a XR3 frame. Not the XR3 Red. This was made in 1962 according to the serial number

Hey, Asphalt Man, I have the set of grips I took off of mine; (to replace with ones I made). I'm not really interested in selling them; (thinking that my heirs might like to have the originals, perhaps), but if you run out of options, and can't find what you want, you can have them cheap. I'll take a look and see if they are the "RED's" or not. I think they are actually a type of 'rosewood', though, not walnut. ??

Yeah, I checked my set of grips, and apparently they are the more common "RED" version. Sorry.

Putting a "Want to Buy" ad in the "Buy, Sell, Trade" forum here is a good bet, as well.

As mentioned, the factory XR3 walnuts are kinda scarce, but they do turn up on occasion.

Barring that, you can't beat Cary's work.

PS The original "black plastic" panels turn up once in a while , too, and they would be appropriate as well.
