New Red Label

I bought a new Red Label 12ga in Jan. I own an older model and really liked it so I decided to buy my first brand new shotgun. The minute I got it home and put it together I intuitavely knew something was wrong. Within an hour I was back to the dealer. He put it together and checked it over and gave his approval. That same night was shooting night at my club. There I was with a brand new gun strutting like a peacock, we were shooting skeet that night, the other members had thier Brownings and Barettas. I called for the high house, led the bird, squeezed the trigger, click. This went on at every station until the range safety officer made me stop. I finished with a borrowed Browning. The next day it was on it's way back to Ruger. The forearm was almost split in two, the screw that holds the metal to the forearm was hitting the bottom barrel and left scratches in the blueing. No problem Ruger repaired the gun,I had to wait 8 weeks. The first night back to the club to try again. This time I hit the first 4 birds then, click. Back to Ruger, they replaced some parts, even gave me better wood. This time 10 weeks. Now we are into trap league. Take my already repaired twice brand new Red Label back for the first night and I had 6 to 8 clicks in 25 tries. Another member wanted to try, same results. Next day back to the dealer, this time it failed on him. Back to Ruger. This time they say they might replace it. I need some encouragement or advice. Keep it, tolerate it, or get rid of it? I'm very patient and I don't get upset or bent out of shape, I still like the gun though. Thanks for your time.

tonyex, You're a lot more patient than I would have been. Sometimes things just don't go together right and you end up with a boat anchor. This is obviously one of those times. I'm afraid I'd be on the phone with Ruger demanding a replacement or a refund.

I also think you should get a replacement. You should only need to send in a gun once at most for repair in it's life if you take good care of it. You have a brand new gun that has failed you 3 times after being repaired 3 times.

They put better wood on the second time they had it in their shop. Looked real good. If they decide to replace this gun I'll probably just get the standard grade. But I won't mind. I just want one that shoots everytime I say Pull.

GREAT NEWS, Today my dealer signed a letter from Ruger for them to proceed with replacing my gun, at no cost to me. I should have the replacement in a couple of weeks. This time the dealer will test fire it with a couple boxes of shells before I take possession of it and avoid any more embarrassment to me and Ruger. Why should I be embarrassed you asked? I feel embarrassed for Ruger, I know and everyone else here knows that they are better gun makers then the one I recieved. I've owned this Red Label for 6 months and only was able to use it 4 times. The rest of the time it was in shipping and the repair shop. Boy am I going to enjoy shooting a gun that goes boom every time I pull the trigger. Thanks for putting up with me and my whining.

I have about 4,000 skeet rounds thru mine and it has gone bang everytime and has been fed light handloads exclusively. My skeet scores went up 3-4 birds a round once I got mine. Glad to hear they are making it right and hope you feel as good about your new one as I do about mine. Good luck.

Thanks terry p and ecoo75, I get more excited every time the phone rings thinking that my replacement has arrived, but I'll just have to wait a little longer. Maybe tomorrow. I know my score will improve once I can relax at the post and have confidence that the gun is going to respond. Thanks again,
Tony

Too bad. Seems to me the dealer or Ruger should have shaken it down the first time and really tested it. Is not in anyone's best interest to re-ship the same shotgun.

Enjoy. I picked up a 26" Red Label last year off a guy that barely shot it and wanted to move it for cash. My only Ruger shotgun.

DCunniff, I also have a 26" Red Label that works perfect. It is 20 years old but them clays don't know that. It hits just as many as the Brownings at the posts beside me. I would like to sell it some day, when and if I ever get my new one, so I can use the money to buy a new GP100. Still waiting for that phone call. Maybe tomorrow. Thanks for your thoughts.

Tony, good for you on 20 year Red Label. I have shot mine on trap this year and did OK once I got the hang of it. Tougher trigger than some of my trap guns. But in a couple of rounds I shot my average.

I have an old Browning Citori I shoot for the past few years and my wife has a Beretta 628, both customized. Before that various standard pumps, side by sides, over unders for trap.

My Red Label won't get much use but I'm glad I took it off a friend's hands.

Brando, I called them today and the rep told me it is ready to ship. Her words " maybe today, maybe tomorrow, maybe Friday, it should only take a couple days." Then click, end of conversation. One thing she told me at the beginning of the call she ask for the ser. no. when I gave it to her she said she didn't have a record of that number. My number started with 410- she said she had a 411-. I guess they changed the number. But it made me wonder if any one there knows what is going on. I'll soon learn once I get the thing in my hands and get a chance to use it. I need a whole bunch of good luck wishes from a bunch of people. Thanks for asking.

I finally got my new RL and it shoots great. I knew Ruger wouldn't let me down. I even have a real nice looking piece of wood to show off. It was a good day for guns because my new GP100 came in that day so I got to take both of them home with me. I'll be busy at the range trying out that new revolver and on Wed. night I'll be back to shooting skeet. I'll post some pictures when I find some time to take some pictures. School has started so Grandpaps Taxi service has been busy. Thanks all for listening to my cry baby story.:D:D:D

It's nice to hear everything turned out OK. Now take those grandkids to get some ice cream and load up on some ammo :) Happy shooting!

ps. If the world had half the patients you do, it sure would be a better place to live.

Skeet report

I shot Skeet with my replaced RL last night and I'm thrilled to report that the gun never mis-fired, but the shooter missed. I have a total of 100 rounds on the gun now. and so far it has performed perfectly. Now I have to train the gun to hit every clay bird that flies by. I just hate having so much fun.

Hi Tony,

This is a very old thread as it's been all of 10 years and some since you got your replacement Red Label O/U. Just curious to know just how has it has performed over time.

My 1989 RL English stock in 20 ga. with 28" bbls. is still going strong after many thousands of rounds of both Skeet and dove shooting and to date the only problem it's ever given me was a broken ejector.

I had another fun night shooting Skeet last night. I hit more birds then I ever have. This replaced RL is working perfect, I'm more relaxed shooting because I know I'm going to hear a Boom instead of a Click. I'm beginning to feel a score of 25 is just around the corner. Can't wait till next Wed.
