Loading a 12 gauge pump.

Got me a Savage/Stevens model 620 12 gauge riot gun. It's really, really old. Can't find a serial number anywhere.

I'm having trouble loading the first round into the chamber. I assumed you put it into the magazine and rack it into the chamber using the slide. But sometimes when I do that the shell gets jammed up in the receiver. After I fire the first round it works perfectly.

Shell jammed in receiver

Soooo....... Am I supposed to just put the first round into the chamber and then put the rest into the magazine?

......I am so confused.......

Prior to the gun control act of 1968 it was not required to serial number long guns. Inexpensive ones or ones sold thru hardware stores sears etc sometimes did not have them. You might have a faulty extractor.

Oh I can already hear em now...

Put one in the chamber and stuff the tube. Don't touch the trigger until you're ready to fire..

Or, take it to a GS and have him take a look?

A question: Will it cycle if you have it cocke, but the camber empty, by using the slide release? or to put it another way if you have the action cocked and then load the mag will it cycle if you use the slide release?
