| I love RUGER but is a Red Label Over Under 12ga worth $1K Saw one today at a "Not So LGS" and its the first time I put my hands on a Ruger Shot-ty. I want one but its 4-6 Guns down my Wishlist. What makes it worth that much when I can pickup a Mossberg 500 or a Remington for under $300?

Pick them up with your eyes closed and mount to your shoulder and then reopen them. If the Mossberg or the Remington is right there go fo it. Do the same with the Red label and I think you'll see the difference.

Well, considering they no longer produce Red Labels as of 1/1/12. Something to think about.

Yep, the Red Label line is gone. I'm a bit "PO'd" as I bought a new model 4165 last August. Unfortunately, most if not all guns with American marks are now made in China or overseas somewhere. I wanted an American made 12 gauge, I bought a Ruger! It took me a while to find a new one and once I did they were history. So ends the last made American shotgun, I think. So, I contacted Ruger and this was their response to me, "We have discontinued the Ruger Red Label line of shotguns – for the time being. We have many new products in the works."

Well you know what that mean. Theres a El Cheapo Shot Gun on the way. I love American made but I cant afford a $1k Shotty. It was beautiful to hold it and maby one day Ill get me one. If they do bring out a Ruger 12 Gauge under $500 I'm all over it. Quote:

Yep, they sure are expensive, but you get what you pay for. I wanted something that I would be proud to pass on to my son. So, I dropped the bucks on something decent. Everything is being outsourced overseas but I draw the line on my guns. Only American made for me.

It's not surprising if you look at the numbers. In the first 13 years of production (1995 - 2007), there were over 79,000 12 gauge units produced (which was the most popular version), which is an average of almost 6,100 per year. From 2008 - 2011, that number dropped to 1,381 units total (345 per year). This decision has been in the making for several years. Whether it was driven by profitability or lack of market interest (or a combination of both), it's not a surprise.

Your figures pretty much show why production has stopped: Since 2008, most people don't have enough money for a Red Label. And that's not going to change as long as Robin Hood is in the White House.

That is what I was thinking it's more a matter of individual economics. I sent Ruger a question and this is part of their answer: Quote: |
We have discontinued the Ruger Red Label line of shotguns – for the time being. We have many new products in the works so please continue to check the Ruger often.
| So it sounds like they haven't ruled out resuming production in future years.

The Ruger Company is just like every other firearm company .
They are not going to make something that is not selling .
The market is flooded with new and used Red Labels .
I will bet that it will be back in a couple years after the market drys up some.
But keep your eyes open, I am betting we will see a Ruger Pump soon !

Comparing O/U's with Mossy's or Remy's is like apples and oranges. The both do the same thing but yet are different. I have both the 20 and 12 ga. Red Labels, They wil be the last ones I part with.

| My thoughts..
I own a few side by sides, also the remington pump 870 and 1300 winchester pump guns and also the ruger red label engraved all weather over and under 12ga. The difference to me between these can be compared by saying, its like getting into a new 6 cylinder camaro. Driving it around a while and getting used to it. Then climbing into a new v8 SS camaro. The 6 cylinder is plenty strong and a good car, however the v8 feels so much better and gives you a smile everytime the exhaust speaks. They both do the same thing get you where you want to go, but the SS gives you a bigger smile on your face when you press the gas pedal down. Know what I mean! |

I agree with some of the others. If you are seriously shopping Remmingtons and Mossbergs against a Red Lable. A Red Lable is not for you.
