Exclamation ammo question in a 410

okay guys before you answer this know that most all 410's are full choke. my question is, can i shoot 000' buck through my full choke 410? the space between the shot and the bore is about .02 the bore is .36 and the ball is .34 i dont want to fire the round if i will get explosive results. i am asking a more experienced 410 shooter. any input will help out, i just need to know if it is safe, that is a small small gap between the shot and the bore. i really dont want to bananna peel my barrel. i bout a 5 pack of the shells not thinking about the full choke... PLEASE help me out.

IMHO, contact the maker of the firearm and ask them. If anyone knows the answer it would be them.

With that said, most rifled slugs for shotguns will shoot through any choke. If there was a danger of the gun going 'BOOM' you think there would be a warning.

thanks i guess your right. someone told me with the 410 that you can shoot slugs and buck through a full choke because most all of them are full choke. if it was dangerous there probably would be a warning on the ammunition box. if it was a danger it probably would have happened and would be on the box. along with the gap between the bore and the shot being .02. i think now, it might be made for a full choke

I replied to your PM.

Technically, you can shoot a slug through a full choke. I wouldnt shoot 100's of slugs back to back. Yeah, you can shoot a few here or there. But, other than that, its strongly NOT recommended.

As for .410's with chokes other than full, thats why I bought the Mossberg 505 (youth version). Modified choke, not full. There are a few single shots with a cylinder bore choke. Or you could do like I did, cut the choke off and shoot slugs that way.

Last Fall I bought a new Mossberg 500 .410. It's really a nice little gun - inexpensive, small frame, double bead, decent wood, etc.

Your question prompted me to check the owner's manual. The book says that the 500 can shoot any factory ammo. If does say that the over-bored 535 cannot handle slugs and that shooter uses them at their own risk. They also say that the extra-tight turkey chokes cannot handle steel shot.

From that, I gather that slugs with a full-choked .410 Mossberg 500 are fine. If not, Mossberg would have included the full-choked .410 500 in their disclaimers.

However, I've always been told that modified is the most accurate slug choke.

This is what I believe - I'm no expert and someone unsure should call the factory rather than rely on my opinion.

Good luck ...

I shoot 000 buck from my H&R 410 full choke. The results are good from mine it one of the balls hits 4 to 6 inches lower than the others must of the time with the target 15 to 20 yards away. The other 2 holes are usually touching. In my gun the 000 buck is only accurate to about 30 yards constantly. I only keep it around for HD for the wife. I get better results with 3" #4s.
