Love the old ones. Most of us very likely shot our first game bird with one.
I've said before thet I think old well-made American single-shot shotguns are a great collecting opportunity. They're relatively inexpensive, made by respected companies, and display good craftwork.
Plus, they usually make for a great back up hunting shotgun.
Iver Johnsons are a particular favorite. The Winchesters are getting pricey. I regret years ago selling an old Winchester 370 28 ga. even thought it was Canadian-made. The old Tenite stocked ones would make a nice collector's niche, too.
My thoughts, anyways ...

The single shot shotgun runs from mild to wild. I aways have a few H&Rs around for different things but all my barrels inter-change where I can take one frame with three different barrels if space is a problem. The most I have paid for a single was about six grand when trap shooting everyday and the least probably twenty five I paid for a Savage when a guy needed gas money. Some of the real old cast iron frame guns are not that safe to shoot but may well have nicer wood than a high dollar bolt gun today

thats a shame you sold your 370 that series of 37's are becoming rare. the 370 is in fact canadian made. i have a 37A youth in 410 i cant find much info on it. i do know that they were made in 1972 through 1979 and only 400,000 made. it is the model after the 370 and the 370 is the model after the 37 steel bilt. they are rare and part of winchesters not so distant past. if held on too they will be worth alot. but still not worth selling because its a winchester and they are very well made. it does have a sn. but the steelbilts did not. the 37A's are very scarce and the youth ones are even more rare. im thinking of buying another single shot "pepper blaster" i love them and cant get enough of them. i said in a different post that single shots are a time consumer and money saver. say with a semi you miss and you fire again. with the singles and sxs you take time to really aim your best, and you burn through far less ammo then any pump or semi.

My first shotgun was a single-shot Savage Model 220A in 28 gauge. Slick little gun . . . hammerless with auto-ejector. Arrived at Christmas of 1957 or 1958.
Later, I bought myself a very used Winchester Model 37 "Steelbilt" single-shot in .410 bore. Semi-hammerless, auto ejector. Refinished it with linseed oil and cold blue.
Still have both of 'em. |

I shot my first grouse with dad's (now my) Browning A-5. Instant decapitation. After that I have used my brother's Remington single-shot 20 gauge. I like it much better, it comes up fast and does not kick as much. I did have a Stoeger Backpacker .410 with a 12" barrel. What a brute. Loud, and squirrels just seemed to walk through the pattern. I would like to get my own 20 ga. single or double coachgun sometime.

I have an old Single barrel Savage from 1968 or '69 in 12ga. Haven't used it since sometime in the eighties but still cherish the ole gal.
I really don't shotgun hunt any more just small game and on occation a deer hunt. I know shotguns can be used on both the small game and deer but in that senero I much prefer a rifle or suitable revolver.

Unlike the States where you have to have a shotgun barrel 18" or longer (unless a registered Short Barrel Shotgun), your shotgun barrel in Canada can be as short as possible as long as the overall length of the gun is 26" or more with a fixed stock. Weird huh? I mean, we can't have AK's (Prohibited), AR's (Restricted, same as handguns), handguns (except at the range), more than 5 shot mags in rifles and 10 shot mags in handguns, BUT.......... we can have a 12" barrel shotgun. Gotta love Liberals. |

I have 2 single shots. One in 20ga and one in .410.
My 20ga kicks pretty hard, since the wood is very light. My .410 is alot heavier. |

I love my ss shot guns, I have an H&R/NEF one receiver 3 barrels 410 full, 20ga mod, 12ga full turkey its dressed in straight camo laminate stock I have a limbsaver pad and it works great. The 410 is my favorite because it patterns good with #4's. The 12 ga loves 00 buck and keeps a tight pattern. The laminate stocks are heavier than most of the pallet wood stocks and that helps on the recoil.
