S&W P1000 question

I have an S&W P1000 shotgun which is chambered for up to 3" shells which I bought new in '78.....So my question is this, is it capable of handling 3" magnums?

I've been told any shotgun stamped for 3" will shoot magnum loads. True or false?

My son needs a turkey gun and I'm not to excited about letting him use my 1100 Rem. I've searching on line for a while today without finding anything conclusive. I plan on contacting S&W on Monday to see what info they can offer, from what I have found out they didn't sell like they anticipated and they were used in LE and PD's. I believe they were produced from the mid 70's to mid 80's.

This is a made in Japan weapon, (don't dis me, I was a teenager back then, lol).

Any insight would be appreciated.

Mark204, That's what 3" shells are .... magnums, so yes, your shotgun or any other marked for 3" shells will shoot magnums.

Thanks Iowegan, I thought that was the case, but would rather error on the side of caution.

My 1100 clearly has "Magnum" engraved in the receiver and since this S&W was made in Japan.....well I just wanted to be sure before I sent it home with my son.

Thanks again

The main problem with 3 inch shells in most guns is recoil. shoot a few first before hunting with them.
