Hello guys--

I have an opportunity to purchase a Red Label 12 ga 28 inch barrel. It is a mid 90's Red Label with less then 2500 rounds through the barrel's.

The owner wants $850. Is this a fair price? It is a friend of my fathers and he said if 850 was not fair to let him know.

What do you guys think?

If it is in great shape then it is a fair price. The only problem I have encountered with my Red Label is probably 2 or 3 times in the 5,000 rounds I have thru it live rounds have slipped past the extractors. I shoot my own reloads so I don't know if it is a problem with the extractors or the brass on the shells wearing it smaller? Now I am very careful when I load to be sure it doesn't happen but suspect it is the shells.

New to me Red Label

Ok guys I have the Ruger Red label 28 inch. I have not shot is yet, just got it. I have been told that the safety goes on after you reload.

I have also been told that Ruger will do a mod and change the safety so it will not do the auto safety. Is this correct? Does the safety come on after each reload and does Ruger do the mod?

If so, is there any info on this? Maybe I could do it?

It's been a few years since I owned my Red Label, but yes it did have an automatic safety, which is pretty common on over/unders intended for field use, I think. Since I was using it only for skeet, I had Ruger disable the automatic safety. I suspect most gunsmiths could do it as well, but I can't help with DIY instructions- maybe others more knowledgeable will be able to help you with that. Good luck and enjoy your new gun.

Good gun. I bought a late 90's off someone that barely shot it and wanted to get a handgun. He was to go bird hunting and never really did. Mine is 26", and I paid about the same you did. Got the box and all the chokes.

I just recently added a couple of extended chokes for 5-stand this fall.

My wife Saturday took this gun pheasant hunting for the first time and I brought a 28" Stoeger O/U I won a few years ago at a DU banquet.

Good luck with it.

Bluesky, I got them from Brownells mail order. I bought an extended choke in improved cylinder and modified to start. They are Briley's for Ruger.

I am taking it to a friend's in NH. Going to do at least one of these Saturday. Skeet at his gun club, or shoot pheasant and chuckers at a bird club he belongs to.

Blueskies, I shot my 26" barrel Ruger OU yesterday at a bird club as I mentioned. Friend tok me there to get more training time in for his dogs, and I was the gunner for him. Pheasants and Chukars.

We had a chance to do sporting clays but skipped it. I would have used the same gun.

My friend had a 20 gage for his wife, not Ruger. She saw a 28 gage Ruger, wanted it and he bought it for her when she birds too. I felt it yesterday, about as heavy as a .22 rifle.
