This is a discussion on Home Defense Shotguns within the Ruger Shotguns forums, part of the Rifle & Shotgun Forum category; What do you guys use for your "go to" shotgun and loads at 3:00 AM with a Bad Guy coming through the back door?
I ...
Have an old Mossberg .20 with two slugs and two buck in it-four more on the side-light enough and light recoil enough for my 13-year-old to handle-a youth model of same on layaway for better fit-then the old one will warm my back in the truck. Figure if I have to make a head shot the slugs need to be first-we have a dog and unlikely anyone would get in to grab someone---hard to plan for anything and everything...plan, prepare, and pray-in any order.
We keep a couple of Ithaca mod.37 20ga pumps handy. This is my wifes "favorite shotgun and is cut down 'special' to fit her like a glove................
Oh , they only use basic field loads ,for 'birds'... ha ha
Just gotta love that middle of the night, all in the dark, "clackity-clack" of the pump action being worked, then a nice loud "who's there?"
The only two shotguns I currently own are a Mossburg 500 12 ga pump and a short barreled Baikal/REmington double barrel SxS, also in 12 ga. Either would do for home defense, and do quite well.
I've got a Rem.1100 12 ga. and a Stoeger side-by-side 20 ga. with 26" barrels. The 1100 stays in the closet close by but the Stoeger is in the corner near my nightstand. I'm lookin' to sell the Stoeger and replace it with a shorter barreled auto or pump. [8D]
As short as that is it should be real handy. With some practice, which is needed on all arms, 3 rounds should be plenty for home defense. Looks short, ugly and deadly, I wouldn't want to be looking down the weong end of the barrel.
I have a Remington 870HD w/ 18" barrel and 2 round extension and factory synthetic stocks. I changed out the plastic trigger assembly for a beautiful NOS aluminum Wingmaster one. I also added a Vang Comp big button safety and a steel magazine follower out of a police magnum. I keep it loaded with Remington Express 2-3/4" 00 Buck; 6 in the tube, empty chamber, action unlocked and safety off. Simply rack the slide and it's ready for action.
Mine holds 4 X 3" Remington 00 Buckshot, chamber empty, action unlocked, safety off. Pick it up, pump it and you're ready... In 20 seconds, I could send 60 .33 caliber "rounds" to a bad guy...
