Hey off road your right its ridiculous that inmates are allowed to pursue bodybuilding or any form of martial art/fighting training in jail.....whats there aim ??? to create fitter more dangerous super crims??...training should be restricted to fitness and well being only.
Your right in a combat situation in a hallway if the perp is intent on engageing you imho a hand gun is far easy to wield than a shotgun....but how many crims are kamikaze and prepared to die for a burglary, most want to get the f%#@ out of dodge and avoid a confrontation especially armed ....true there are physcos around that are an exception to the rule but more often than not most are more scared than you are.As long as you can keep at least 6 foot plus between your self and a perp i think a short barrel HD shotgun is perfect, its easily more intimidating than a hand gun has twice the potential stopping pwr and depending on loads is relatively neighbour safe to use, many victims of home invasion are relatively old or simply not up for a hand to hand confrontation so it should be a paramount term of engagement and the first rule not to put yourself in a position where the perp gets that close in the first place, like any scenario it should be practiced for and with practice one can hopefully be prepared to create a scenario not fall victim to it.
Here in NZ ,because we have no second ammendment we have had many courtcases whereby the victim has defended themselves useing firearms and ended up on charges themselves(a ridiculous situation).
So for most situations a good torch and a baseball bat suffice....the trick is if one is ever unfortunate enough to find themselves in this scenario keep a cool head stick to a plan and be very very aggressive.

If a perp is going to enter your house alone, I'd bet that he's going to do so with the sole intent of hoping for an empty house with a quick entry and exit; looking for cash and jewelry. Such a perp will most likely be detered by any homeowner or inhabitant no matter what they're carrying. However if you are unlucky enough to be targeted for an invasion which is usually carried out by a team of 2+ and are unluckly enough to be home during the event, I'll keep my H&R 12ga. With the folding stock and 18.5" barrel it's short enough to be maneuverable as my home is a little tight around the stairway and front hall. Targeting is idiot proof with the laser/light. If the intruders aren't on the run after 5 rounds unless you're Steven Segal (the early '90's version, not him now...) there's really nothing else that's readily available that's going to help you if you aren't carrying a handgun at the time of the invasion and even then, someone who's not detered or dead after a shotgun volley will probably laugh at almost any handgun. I have the big gauge on a quick-release rack in the closet and the rest of the stuff is in a safe. I have a Buck Master that's kept in the mattress as a backup but I have training in how to use it. I wouldn't expect my wife to wield that without having it taken away from her. As for a handgun, in my situation I have a wife that's nervous around firearms in general. I'm lucky I convinced her to squeeze off a few shotgun rounds to get the feel and familiarize her in the operation of the unit. I haven't been able to mate her with a handgun.

had a 870 sps turkey gun with a 21" barrel that did double duty when I first got it, then as time progressed and my collection grew it was left to closet duty. I hardly ever shot it. a few years ago I got into cowboy shooting. I got a 1897 Chinchester copy thats been slicked up a might. It'll hold six 2 3/4" 00buck in the tube and there's 4 more in the custom Kirkpatrick butt cuff. Since I've shot it a heck of a lot more than the ol 870 it's taken over the closet duty and the 870 has been surplussed.

You meet an intruder face to face in a hallway. You have this clumsy thing sticking out a yard long in front of you, and all he has to do to effectively disarm you is grab the muzzle and point it in some other direction.
with that attitude your probably better off running away. a very little bit of training will turn that yard long clumsy thing into an effective close quarters weapon. the perp grabs my muzzle he's going to be swallowing teeth from the butt stroke he'll soon recieve.
BTW that's the big reason I don't like pistol grips.

20 Ga. Mossberg Crusier #3 buck. Tried to trade it in on a 12 ga. twice and both times the GS owner talked me out of trading it in but wanted to sell me a 12Ga. anyway. Said the wife would be much better with the 20Ga if she ever needed to use it. according to them the 20Ga. has 70% of the power of a 12 ga. with 50% of the recoil. Never realized it but the 20 Ga has quite a following for H/D.

I have a Remington 870 HD. Currently it sits with four 3" 000 magnums in the tube and nothing in the chamber. I meant to buy 00 but didn't read the box. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to try to get the job done with 40 .36 caliber pellets instead of 60 .33 caliber pellets.
