i keep my 870 Express loaded with 4-00 buckshot in the 2-3/4" sometimes i keep the gun empty sitting in my gunsafe. the 3 inch buckshot is a little but overkill, u can do fine with the 2-3/4 inch 00 buckshot.

3" shells tend to overpenetrate farther then the 2-3/4".

i will go for my SR9 or Bushmaster AR for HD, for those who prefer the shotty thats just as good.

Another vote for the Mossberg Maverick, mine is loaded with Remington 00-9 pellet, also a Streamlight TLR1 mounted for decent night use.

There is no (legal) shotgun that can be turned aruond in narrow hallways like a Bullpup , plus the fact it can be snugged up into your right shoulder and that leaves your left hand free for doors , lights , etc.

Mossberg 930SPX and Remington 870. 870 has Knoxx recoil reducing stock.
The Mossberg I just bought recently, and my first time out with it, I shot some skeet. #4 shot, did very well. Also shot slugs and 00buck...this gun is awesome!

While everyone should have combat shotguns in their arsenal, it is foolish to rely on one as your primary home defense weapon! Home defense is likely to be close up and personal CQC in crowded quarters, where a clumsy long gun will likely be useless if not a serious handicap. The notion that you will hear something go bump in the night, grab your shotgun, and have time to gather the family and barricade yourselves in a room (while calling 911!) where all you will have to do is defend a single doorway....is fanciful thinking!

My fave combat shotguns are the Remington 870 and Benelli M4. Owned a few Mosbergs as well over the years, but never kept them long term.

870 Wingmaster 20 ga. with 6 rounds of no. 6 shot and my flashlight on it, i've used this on alot of critters up close and it works! I live in a large trailer so he can't ever really get out of range and it only has to get me to the safe, then he's in big trouble!

I would have no problem relying on one as a primary HD gun. I don't live in cramped or crowded quarters. Not useless and not a handicap.

Also.. "fanciful thinking"? no, not the way I think. I like to think it will never happen. But I'm prepared if it does.

You meet an intruder face to face in a hallway. You have this clumsy thing sticking out a yard long in front of you, and all he has to do to effectively disarm you is grab the muzzle and point it in some other direction. Meanwhile, you pulled the trigger in all the confuion, and your kid upstairs now has an a$$ full of buckshot....

I'll stick with my compact Glock 23 backed up by a S&W 342 in my pocket, both loaded with Glaser Safety Slugs. The 342 never leaves my pocket, so I won't have to go scrambling for another arm, if one is out of reach.

Sarcasm won't save you! With the popularity of mixed martial arts stuff, everybody is into hand to hand combat. They practice it all day long in the jails! The likelihood a criminal will want to go hand to hand with you is great, and you don't want to be encumbered with a long gun! Leave the long guns in the safe, where they won't get stolen....

Ok, I'll sell my useless HD shotguns and sign up for karate classes at the Y. Soon, my own two hands will have to be registered as lethal weapons!
If criminals are all martial arts experts, I need to level the playing field... You too! your little hand gun is useless against these warriors!
