For HD, Zombie slayin' and fun at the range I'd call the 12ga. Remi 870 and Mossberg 500 a draw. Either/both should do everything they're asked to do and more and a buyer's choice will probably come down to ergonomics or perception. For simplicty and old timey cool, I gotta agree that a SxS coach gun is hard to beat. Chamber it in 20ga. and you've got something the wife can kill Zombies with too! I mostly approach firearms from a defense standpoint though, so my knowledge of sporting shotguns is limited. But I suppose you could kill Zombies with a fully-choked over under right?

1. My favorites are the only ones I own.
All around utility gun is the Mossburg 500 camo slugster barrel (non rifled).
For Turkey, Deer, Home defense. Like a Craftsman hammer.
2. Pheasant is the Gold Label (English stock) hands down. But for Tower hunts or Clays, needs a shoulder pad. What a beautiful piece of work.
3. My Partridge gun is Red Label 20 GA. w/ English stock.

I have owned 2 Remington 870's along with an Ithaca 37, but it seemed every time I played "What If" panic situations, I would short storke the pump action, and jam the things up. (my fault, but that's how it went). Now I'm looking at purchasing a semi-auto, either a FN SLP, or a Mossberg 930 SPX, although both have sight systems that I think would be better suited to some sort of anti-aircraft gun. I would prefer just a gold bead front sight.

Not a shotgunner, but I have a 500 with 3 barrels (smooth slug, rifled slug, long barrel with choke tubes). It's done everything I've ever asked from it.

I don't own a single shotgun now but if I win a lottery there are two that I would quickly look for.
Winchester model-12 in 12 ga.
Winchester model-47 in .410 ga.

Don't laugh....maybe the trigger sucks but nothing (legal) in a 12 gauge can be whipped around in confined areas like a Mossberg Bullpup.
Very loud because you are right where all "the action goes down" and if it were any heavier it would not kick at all.LOL.

I went to replace the wood butt stock on my Mossberg 500A because I wanted a synthetic with a better pad. I gave the screw one twist and the butt full off. The screw had been so badly cross threaded that almost nothing was holding on. I bought this thing almost ten years ago because a buddy and I were going to try our luck at turkey hunting. We never did and I have to wonder what would have happened with one pull of that trigger. I kept it and someday might see if a helicoil will fix it but lets say Mossberg isn't my favorite.
My fav has to be my grandfather's Browning Auto-5 Lightweight. Many a chukar partridge met its end and he won a few local matches with it. This one will never be sold off and the phrase "From my cold dead hands..." comes to mind. |
