Odd Red Label Problem: Top Barrel Selected, Bottom Barrel Doesn't Fire! (Brand New)

Strange problem with my brand new, 2014 Red Label 30":
  • One round in bottom barrel, bottom barrel selected. Pull trigger: BOOM
  • One round in top barrel, top barrel selected. Pull trigger: BOOM
  • Two rounds (one in each barrel), bottom barrel selected. First trigger pull: BOOM (bottom), second trigger pull: BOOM (top)
  • Two rounds (one in each barrel), top barrel selected. First trigger pull: BOOM (top), second trigger pull: NOTHING (bottom).

So - I know both firing pins work, but when I have the barrel selector on "T", with both barrels loaded, first pull fires the top barrel, but the second pull does NOT fire the bottom barrel. (Opposite situation -- barrel selector on "B" with both barrels loaded: first pull fires bottom barrel, second pull fire top...no problem.)

What can this be??? I hope there's an easy fix/explanation. Any advice?

Thanks.

Call Ruger customer Svc

They will discuss the problem and will repair if necessary.

They usually send a call tag so shipping is on them too.

UPDATE - Worked but then didn't work!!

So - I removed the butt stock and thoroughly cleaned and then lubed the inner workings. After that (using snap caps), it worked fine - in any order or combination. Sweet!!

BUT - I took 'er to the range today, and although it worked fine for the first few doubles, it then started malfunctioning on BOTTOM-->TOP doubles only. Barrel selector set on "B", both chambers loaded, BOOM on the bottom barrel, and then NOTHING on the top. Not a click...just felt like the gun wasn't cocked.

However, if I then put it back on Safe, manually change the selector from "B" to "T", (take off the safety) and pull the trigger --- BOOM!! (So it's not the firing pin, per se.)

So it's really just BOTTOM/TOP-order doubles that are malfunctioning. TOP/BOTTOM works fine, every time. All singles (top or bottom) work fine. Just something about the gun not "switching over" from the bottom to the top when shooting double, after firing the bottom.

It worked with snap caps, and then a few times at the range. Is there something inside the action I can inspect/de-bur/polish/lube, etc.?? Is it possible it's "dirty ammo" gumming up the works somehow? (But then why would TOP/BOTTOM work fine?)

I'd hate to send 'er back already!!!

I would recommend ruger if you are not in a real hurry. Problem should be related to the Sear Selector/Inertia Weight which you can see in your manual.

Ruger states these parts must be factory fitted and I suggest you request that since it is a factory fitted series of parts, you would like them FITTED RIGHT!!! Nicely of course...

You may be right, but I guess this isn't something I can fix at home. Are you drawing that conclusion because after the failure to fire, if I flip it back to "S", then manually switch it over to the Top barrel, (without opening and resetting the triggers), the gun fires?

With the shotgun less than a week out of the box, it breaks my heart to send it off, but I guess that's the best plan.

I'm going to call Ruger tomorrow to see what they say. I'll keep you updated.

The problem directly points to those parts. Could be a simple thing and maybe Ruger can point to something on the phone that you may be able to do (doubt it though). I am interested in what they say/do in the end so appreciate that you will update us.

I would say it is good news that the gun works/doesn't work as it does. Should not be any major issue.

I do not have one here (unfortunately) to look at to advise you so enjoy the gun when you get it back/working right.

Mine developed much of the same problem today at the range except in the reverse order. Mine will not fire a double if the bottom barrel is selected, only the bottom fires. If I select the top barrel to fire first it seems to work as expected. I have shot 250-300 shells through it before any problems developed. I purchased the shot gun new June of this year. I'm sure ruger will fix the problem but it's very frustrating knowing the hoops I'll have to jump through to get it done.

OP hasn't been back since June 7.
Wonder what the outcome was?

I was wondering the same thing. My guess is that he's waiting to hear from ruger. I plan on calling them in the morning and fully expect to have to mail it back to them.

Make sure you are opening and closing it with some authority, rebounding hammers and the inertial block that stops double firng requires a sold open and closing to completely cock the hammers. The manual states; NOTE:Always open the gun fully. This is the cocking mechanism for the hammers. Firing the top barrel and only opening enough to remove the spent case in the top barrel will not reset the hammers. Curious to hear what ruger tells you if its some other problem.
