Mini 14 30 round mag

Just bought a mini 14 and some factory 30 round mags. Loaded 30 rounds in each mag, tried to insert the first one and would not seem to engage. Took a couple of rounds out and tried again. It did engage and lock, but when I removed the mag the first round was loose in the chamber and the round was dented. Tried again, same result.

Thought I would consult the experts before proceeding. Magazine problem? a friend told me he never loads more than 25 rounds in his 30 rounders. All the reviews I read indicated Ruger factory mags functioned flawlessly.

hmm… I don't have a clue. Are you using an old 30 round mag from Ruger with a new mini 14? I just bought a Ruger factory 10 round mag thats pretty old and I am going to be using it on a new mini 14. I haven't tried it out yet since it hasn't shipped to me yet but I hope thats not the case.

At most, I might load one round short, i.e. 29 rounds in a 30 round magazine. Only loading 25 in a 30 is a bit extreme. Does your friend only load 3 rounds in a 5 round mag ? A 30 round magazine is designed to hold 30 rounds. Loading it short will cause the spring to have a "memory" and if you later load more than your usual it might balk. You said the top round was in the chamber and dented ? Did you try loading the full mag with the bolt locked back ? Then all you'd have to do is pull back the op rod handle slightly and let it go to chamber. If you inserted the mag when the bolt was forward, how did a round get into the chamber, and get dented ?

I'd bought a Mini-14 earlier this year...used, but in great shape. I ordered five 30-round magazines from Ruger. The thing refused to feed on a consistent basis. It'd fire one or two rounds, then jam with the cartridge sticking halfway out the ejection port or something, or the cartridge wouldn't line up with the chamber when feeding. And like you, the magazines didn't seem to always fully engage. And mine was doing the dented round thing, too.

I took it back to the dealer. They ended up sending it back to Ruger, along with one of the new magazines. Several weeks later, Ruger sent it back in this nice new pretty Ruger box and said they'd fixed it. Well, they hadn't fixed it, and to make matters worse, instead of returning my brand new magazine, they sent it back with an old used beat up one with painter's tape wrapped around it.

The dealer was good about it, though. Even though the Mini-14 was used, it was under warranty. So he swapped the old Ruger for a brand new-in-the-box S&W M&P-15 and five 30-round mags. He even threw in a chamber cleaning brush.

But to this day, I still don't know if it was a magazine problem or a Mini-14 problem.

CDNN 30 Round Ruger mags 19.99

I was looking at CDNN and ran across 30 round mags for 24.99 within the last two weeks and didn't buy kicking myself and then here a couple of days ago saw them for 19.99 and bought four. They took my money but I haven't received the "shipped" email yet. That is the best price I have ever seen and even with the shipping I'm coming out at 22.58?

If they ship them at that price. I noticed the next day, they were back up to regular price. You gotta hit things at just the right time.

When 20 and 30 round magazines were legal in nj I always loaded 1 round less. With 10 round I have no problems.

Are those genuine Ruger mags? The ones I see at CDNN are on sale for $39.99

I did find some Ruger 20 round mags for $14.99 last December, but I can't remember where I bought them. I have five, 20 round mags for the Mini 14. Two 10 round mags, a 5 round, and one 30 round.

Never had a problem with 30 round mags in a mini 14.

Acting up with all mags or just one of them?

I've had problems with 30 round mags in my 186 Series Mini-14, but not in the inserting the magazine, failure to feed, and jamming. Never had a problem with the 20 round ones though. Although I've had freshly loaded 30 round mags fire right on thru without a hitch, it only seems if it sits a while, a week or so. I've had 20 round mags sit for months, and went out and shot them, and never had so much as a hic cup. Go figure, must be the nature of the beast. BTW they are all Ruger mags.

That's odd, Ruger magazines are known as expensive but VERY reliable. Something is definitely wrong. I would first make sure they are genuine ruger mags. Aftermarket mini 14/30 magazines are notoriously unreliable. If they are genuine, then I would
suspect they need a good cleaning and lubrication because the mini-series rifles are very reliable due to a light recoil spring and high gas port pressures.

Always used factory mags....heard too many horror stories about cheap mags malfunctioning. Don't go cheap....go ruger mags!

ruger mags

I agree the Ruger mags seem to fit and function best. I've got a 5 round and a 20 that work great so I just bought two more Ruger 20's. I've got a pro-mag 30 round that works OK and three no name 30s. One works and two not so good. The 5 round and 20 round just feel right for the rifle. A 30 rounder seems to long.
