Ruger SR 762 Problems

I just got My New Ruger SR 762 and well mine has a Failure to feed problem, I think it is a Mag problem it does not want to chamber a round & that is if you load a round by hand or fire a round, it flat will not feed without jamming or not loading a round in the chamber. I have yet to get more then 1 shot of without this happening,Oh and sometimes the bolt stays halfway open without loading a round into the chamber it seems to be hanging up on the Mags. Does anybody else if they have this gun have this problem? I found a post elsewhere that at least 2 to 3 others are going through the same thing. Man I never buy the first run of guns when they come out, but I was in the market for a 308 and said what the heck & now I have a gun with a feeding problem. I called the place I got it from & they said they will contact the distributor for Me on Monday as it has a Lifetime Replacement on it. But I just want a gun that Shoots without Bugs. I'm using Federal XM80C FMJ Ammo & not Wolf or anything.

Let Me know if any of you have heard or seen of this problem with the Ruger SR 762

There many possibilities for the feeding issues. Did you strip and clean your rifle before taking it out to shoot? This first step before shooting is very important. Could also be the magazine, do you have another one to try? Ammo is also another culprit, you might want to try different types of ammo. The feeding ramp might be a bit rough and unfinished. Have the guy at the shop take a look at your feeding ramp.

I'm sure someone else with more experience will chime in to help you out.
Good luck, I hope it all works out for you, keep us posted.

Yes I cleaned it and lubed it & I re cleaned when I got home. I'm going to go out and try to see if I can get it to shoot again in the morning. I will try a few different mags and see if it was a bad one that I was using. It should work with the ammo I have but who knows, I just hope it is not that picky on ammo. It sometimes would not even feed just trying to load it into the bolt on the first shot loading it by pulling the bolt back and letting it go to load up & chamber the first round.

I had 2 fail to feeds in the beginning when I first got my SR762. I noticed that the ammo I was using (Mag Tech) had a slightly longer round than my other Remmington .308 ammo that I was using. I think it was getting hung up in the magazine.

These were also the same rounds that I was using when getting fail to fires as well. The slightly longer length was probably very tight in the chamber. Since I've been shooting the Remmington stuff, no issues. Plus I didn't fully clean the bolt and firing pin in the beginning, and they had that sticky preservative coating that wasn't helping either.

I would try a different brand of Ammo, plus fully disassemble the action and clean it if you haven't already done so. My rifle is shooting fine now, also probably needs some break in to help as well.

It was not over lubed this I know, I just put a few drops with a needle oiler on on contact points. I will go down and buy a different brand of 308 and try that, man I'm glad I only bought 100 rounds of this ammo if that's the problem. I going to test it out later today after I get some other ammo from the store & see if that might be it. Dang I hope it is not picky on ammo I have 5 other AR 15's and they eat anything never a problem. I will let you know if I get it going & will look it over real good if it does not feed right & maybe I can see something I was missing yesterday.

I Contacted Ruger and they say they are having a Mag Problem with some of the mags that were sent out and are working on fixing it now. So for now I'm Not CRAZY, I'm going down to pick up a Metal DPMS mag My friend at the gun shop is bring in for Me to test out & see if that works and Ruger told to try it too as some are getting the metal ones to work.

Did you clean the mag that came with the rifle? Sometimes when mags are made they get debris inside also and that could cause the follower to tilt and hang and cause feed problems.

Also if it's a metal mag there could be a burr inside catching the spring or follower. I won't hurt to check and see.

Did you get a metal or plastic mag with the rifle? I would hope Ruger would use metal mags and not Pmags on the 308.

They send out the plastic or what ever it is made Mags with the gun and they sent 3 mags. I have tried all 3 and same thing happens they also told me to try Silicone spray in the mags and see if that helps out but they do know there is a problem with this gun as I'm not the only one with the same issue. I'm in contact with 3 other with the same issue as we speak and our Serial numbers are all in the 02000 range and we all on the west coast too, Maybe a bad batch. Either way they are going to fix or replace the guns or mags.

Not that will help your problem but I had many FTE issues with my new (July) Mini 14. Ruger's legendary reliability (quality) seems to be suffering presently with what I can only assume is the record demand. The good news is their CS is fantastic. Still, it takes some of the joy out of obtaining a new Ruger firearm. They need to tighten up their quality control!

OK I got it to cycle by putting a Metal DPMS mag in it and turning the gas block to #3 at first it would fire but not chamber a round it did it for about 3 rounds then stated to cycle the right way. I then put in the Pmag and BAM same old thing happen I then put the metal mag back in and shoot it some more and back to the Pmag and it finally started to cycle for a few rounds then mess up ather going back and forth and about 80 rounds through it, Finally it was working much better. I not sure what is up with it maybe a break in thing but it is shooting much better. I ran out of ammo so I will grab some more this week and see if it keeps working or not, the Metal Mag is not mine so I'm going to buy one and keep cycling it with the metal one to loosen the gun up.But for now at least I got it to cycle and run with a Metal mag.

Glad you figured out that it is the mag, but it still seams like it should work on the 2 setting.

Well I'm going to buy some more ammo this weekend at the Big Reno Show and go out and fire it again. I think if I run some rounds through it and try to break it in a little more then I will go back to setting #2 and see if it will cycle, if not it is going back to Ruger for some work. I paid to much money for a gun that will not cycle. They said to test it out and let them know so I will fire more ammo and see what happens.

Yea it would not work on #2 it kept hanging up and not loading a round but at least I got it to work some what now, more testing and break in is need to see if it takes a Plane Ride back to Ruger.

It was working pretty good when I ran out of ammo so we shall see.

My SR762 runs perfectly with the three Gen 2 Pmags that came with the gun. Today I bought a Gen 3 Pmag to try and it will not feed a round into the chamber when the bolt catch is pressed. It smashed the cases on 4 rounds and that was enough. I emailed Ruger Tech and Magpul Tech to voice my displeasure. There are some differences in the Gen 3 but the major one appears to be the shape of the follower top. Maybe your gun shipped with the Gen 3 mags!

I'm going to be in the market for a .308/7.62 in a couple of weeks and the SR762 has been one of my top 3 considerations. I'm rethinking that in light of the several reports I've heard and read regarding so many having the FTF issue. Looks like the Sig 716 or the M1A Scout Squad will be the two finalists.

I really like the gun. It's as soft shooter for a 308 and has functioned flawlessly with all of the different brands of ammo I've tried. It's nicely appointed from Ruger and has a great feel. Accuracy has continually improved and I'm keeping mine. After my trial with the new Gen 3 Pmag I'm sure the problem is Magpuls to solve.

Just got this response from Ruger ...... "If you are having problems with new magazines that you purchased, you can try lubing the magazine with a silicone spray. If this does not resolve the problem please contact Magpul at 1-877-462-4785. Thank you."

and this from Magpul...... "we're out of the office".

Problem solved. Almost.

I read your post and skipped ever all the replys because I know what your problem is. Your hammer is getting caught on your bolt carrier. I just sent mine back todsy for the same issue. You can duplicate the problem. Unload gun and pull the bolt back a little past halfway using the charging handle. You will feel a change in friction. Once you feel the change slowly release. The carrier will catch the hammer and stick half open. I Dont recommend you fixing this yourself. Send it back. It will catch with or without the mag in. I also had a problem with the piston rail jamming in the down and up positions. I managed to work it out a little using a cleaning rod and working it up and down about a thousand times. My rear sight will not lock into place either but I can live with that. I spent a ton of money at the range to trying to work out the kinks but without warranty voiding mods I was unsuccessful. Send it back.

SR762 FTE/FTF Issues

I recently discovered the SR762 and was in the process of evaluating it vs. the LWRC M6.8 for a potential purchase. Then I found this forum and thread. So, needless to say, I'm very interested in how the issues in this thread are resolved; either from those experiencing the problems or from the company itself. So far, the silence from Magpul and/or Ruger is deafening. I would think and expect both Magpul and Ruger to weigh in here and officially acknowledge these issues and inform us of their intended resolution. I doubt I'll be spending 2k on any platform with these unresolved/unaddressed/unacknowledged issues.

I had issues with mine as I'm sure you've read. This is the only thread I've managed to find from someone with my same issue. Unfortunately I missed 2 days of a 5 day hog trip wasted 4 boxes of Hornady and 3 boxes of Barnes trying to resolve the issue. I'm hoping for some type of reimbursement but we will see. I know one thing, it better hum when I get it back. I started having issues after the 3 shot the day I bought it. If you decide to get one hopefully you can test fire a mag before you commit. Then you'll only be out a box of ammo if issues arise. After I Bought mine I took it home, stripped it down, and properly lubed/cleaned it. You can lightly lube the piston rail but that should be blown out first shot anyway. Ruger recommends 150gr and less in this gun
I was also told by a Ruger rep on one of my many calls to put sand in the hand grip to saturate the piston rail to remove any burs or excessive coating. I did not take this advise. I will say cosmetically I do love this gun. You can't remove or replace the handguard so if your not happy with the one on it your out of luck. I happen to like it. The only thing I'd change is the stock and charging handle. The gun is also very accurate. I shot my last 2 boxes of ammo single shot (what a pain and disapointment when you have 3 mags) and the accuracy was nice. When I get it Back I'm going to have to putt own a few more bills to very its functionality before taking it hog hunting. The fear of being surrounded by hogs and having a possible FTE and or FTE doesn't exactly make a comfortable reassuring hunt. From what I've heard about Ruger CS I'm sure they will do me right. As of now its just a waiting game till my girl comes home. I'll keep you posted.

Keep us updated on your progress with Ruger and Magpul here. From other forums about FTF/FTE issues it seems the magazines are the primary source of the problems. Maybe magazines just aren't as interchangeable within a group of similar platforms as everyone thinks or says they are. I know some are specifically proprietary, especially with AR10, but still, there seems to be way too many reports in these forums about mag issues. At least, I'm surprised by it.

Ok so I purchased a SR 762 and experienced much the same problems you guys have mentioned. I had failure to feed problems. This happened on both the supplied gen2 pmags as well as gen3 pmags. However, when using a DPMS steel mag i functioned flawlessly. I contacted ruger and was told to ship the rifle and all 6 mags in for evaluation. I also wrote a lengthy email to the Ruger CEO explaining my dissatisfaction with my experience.

I started this process roughly 9 days ago and got a call from Ruger today. The rep didn't seem to know what the actual problem was, but told me they are replacing my rifle with a new one. He said he'd be sending me 2-for-1 DPMS steel magazines, in addition to the 3 gen2 pmags the rifle is sold with. He also said he'd be sending 3 additional DPMS mags along with it due to my front sight not locking in the upright position. That makes a total of 9 DPMS mags and 3 gen2 pmags. Pretty impressive if you ask me. Tracking number shows it arriving here tomorrow or friday. So as long as this rifle functions I will be a very satisfied customer.

I had a similar problem with a mini thirty. I found out it was the simplest thing. The magazine was not loaded properly. I was slamming it in too fast and not properly lining it up into the guide hole. I know, sounds idiotic and novice (and it was). I'm at the range and one magazine would fire great. The next time it wouldn't feed. The range officer came over to help and showed me how to properly insert the magazine. Never had a problem after that.
