Problem with Pmags in SR556FB

Hey guys,
I'm new here. I've been having a problem with my Pmags. I have quite a few of them that I ordered at one time. They're all gen 2. On the Pmags they have different numbers, I'm assuming batch number? Like M3, M4....
Anyways, the ones with the M4 work fine on my gun, but when I use the M3 the bolt catch doesn't catch when the mags empty

This is with the M4

This is messed up with the M3
I thought about sending them back to magpul. I have about 7 that don't work right. Any thoughts?

Disassemble one each of the M3 and M4 mags and compare the followers and springs. Swap the springs and try and see if the problem starts up on the M4 mags or vice versa to rule out what could be the culprit.

I just checked my stash of pmags and found that I own both M3 and M4 marked mags and don't have any issues with them on my DD. Are your followers green? The ones I got are light grey.

If you send those puppies back to Magpul, who knows when you'll see them again. Yikes!

The followers are grey. I thought about taking them apart but didn't want to "void" anything if I sent them back. I did call Magpul and they said they never heard of that problem before and for me to send em in. But like you said, know knows when I'll see them again, if at all! I'd hate to lose em, they're pretty expensive these days. I bought 20 of them in November? for $10.50 apiece, I won't find that deal again

They used to sell for $20.ea up in my neck of the woods and I'm kicking myself for not stocking up back in Nov. 'cause you can never have too many mags.

Nah, unless your pmags are pinned, it shouldn't void any warranty 'cause there are no seals on the base plate. Just wear some safety glasses first before you start disassembling them!

I ordered em from hamlund tactical. They have great prices and it was free shipping. But rarely have anything in stock haha
I work offshore so as soon as I get back on land I'm gonna try taking it apart. I know it's not a horrible problem but it annoys the hell out of me

Sounds like the magazine follower is not engaging the bolt hold open before the bolt starts to return to battery. It could be a weak spring in the PMag. All of mine perform flawlessly, including the ones I received with the gun. Do this: disassemble the offending PMags and see if there is any dirt in the magazine body that might binding the follower. If there is, wipe it out with a soft cloth, wipe the follower with a soft cloth, then reassemble. DO NOT PUT ANY OILS OR LUBRICANTS ON THE FOLLOWER OR SPRING. Then try shooting with the mag to see if the bolt locks back after the last round. If it does, problem solved. If it doesn't send it back to MagPul; it may have a weak spring.

JACK 80, I have 3 AR'S and some times my PMAGS do this no matter what generation they are, maybe i just got a bad batch because Magpul is in such a Dam Hurry to get stuff out the door. One thing i do know is trying to get a hold of Magpul is a bitch and if you send somthing back to them you my as well kiss it good by untill next year. O and by the way i to tryed swaping springs and all that shit and it did not make much of a differance. it does not really bother me that the last shot doe's not stay open so if you want to get rid of a couple of them let me know.............

I suggest you get a copy of Pat Sweeney's book "The AR-15". He goes through mag problems in detail. You are experiencing a "bolt-over-base" failure, generally caused by a weak spring.

I'll check it out. They're all brand new. I'll take em apart as swap springs with one that works and see if that fixes it.
It's not a HUGE problem just annoying and the thought of sending them in never to be seen again bugs me

With my 556FB came the 3/30rd PMAGs (MOE). I bought 2/20 rd gen 2s and 2/20 rd gen 3s from different vendors...not a hiccup in any of them!

I finally got home from offshore, I swapped the springs and followers and still have the same results. M4 works M3 doesn't. It must have something to do with the mold of the mag. I've looked and looked and can't find anything different between the 2

Jack80,

Sorry youi are having issues I have had no issues at all with PMags, Gen 2 and I also have some Gen 3.

I have had a tilt issue with several Thermold Mags I picked up cheap and i know why they were cheap now, they have a tilt issue.

Good luck and I hope you can figure this one out.

Damn that sucks. Sorry to hear that. Maybe find a buddy who you can swap the mag with if it works fine in his rifle?

Have you tested them in another AR? You could sell em get new mags! I've got a hold for some polymer Promags a few weeks back and they seat better than the Mapguls. I heard the new style metal GI mags (brown followers) that are supposed to be excellent and better than PMAGS. After the ban BS was shot down I'm seeing stuff come back in stock like crazy, take your mags to a shop and test them in random rifles.

Just purchased 10x30rd Magpul mags for my Ruger SR556. They arrived in mail yesterday and I tried one in my rifle last night. Would not lock into place. They have the grey follower. Any ideas on how the correct the issue so they work? If not, I am willing to sell at my cost plus shipping to any interested party or I will just send them back for a refund.
