Howdy!

Thanks you to everyone that posted. I've down downloared the Ruger manuel and read it. As stated, it is a new to me Mini 14 Tactical and I did not received a Ruger manuel when I purchased it and it is not a traget rifle. So I'm consideing it safe to fire 5.56 ammo in it.

I contacted Ruger within the last few days asking if my .223 Hawkeye Compact could shoot 5.56 and the answer I got is exactly as stated above. Except for the target model, all Mini's can shoot both. If it says .223, that is what they mean.

I may be misunderstanding your statemant but, Mini 14s are stamped .223(caliber) on the reciever. But, Mini 14s except the Target model fire both the223"Remington" cartridge and 5.56 NATO.

Can the Mini 14 223 caliber handle the higher pressure of the 5.56 round, anyone shooting it in you Mini 14 without problems? If not will just stick to 223 but I have some 5.56 just don't want to damage the new to me Mini 14.

I had the same question and asked a Ruger Rep, they said Mini 14s are OK for the 5.56 round EXCEPT THE TARGET VERSION which is only to fire .223 rounds. Ruger bolt actions also are only to be used with .223 rounds according to the Ruger Rep. When in doubt call Ruger with questions.

This is good news for me and my new Mini 14. It opens up ammo possibilities.

I need to restate what I said because I thought my Mini-14 said 5.56/.223 on the receiver. It does not, it says .223. Ruger told me the Mini-14 has the 5.56 chamber and can shoot either cartridge, except for the target model which is .223 only. My Hawkeye Compact bolt gun is .223 only. Sorry if I created confusion.

When I bought my mini about 20 years ago, I was told only .223. It seems as though Ruger only specified 5.56 when AR's became popular.

I have seen this question asked on other forums also. Ruger should mark the receiver 5.56x45.

It's been more than clear in the owner manuals for some time. It's not marked for any cartridge. It's marked for bore. And if the leade, which it is, long enough it can fire 5.56 NATO. I doubt it's some evil conspiracy. And no it has nothing to do with the AR.
I've had an employee at a major retalers gun range tell me I couldn't run 5.56 in my Mini, it about cost him his job.
It isn't rocket science folks.

I will post some pictures another day. I bought a new tactical Mini-14 last year and haven't even fired it yet because I was tricking it out with folding bipod, tactical rail, and tactical 3-9 with red dot back up. I won't even take it to the range until I get time to mod the trigger sears and spring. This is my second or perhaps third mini 14 and each about a decade newer. As time goes by, it seems, at least to me, that the trigger pull is a bit rougher. It is no trouble to mod IF you know how to do it right and have the proper tools to do the job. As far as ammo goes, the box mine came in clearly says 223 Remington (5.56). I love distance shooting (over 500 yds.) and the 5.56 ammo is clearly superior at ranges out to 1000 yards as the trajectory remains flat. I have a chance to purchase 10,000 rounds of US gov't surplus 5.56 ammo with the green tip. Even full boat tail bullets have a hard time what our troops get given to them. I would not have purchased this rifle had it not been capable of safely firing that ammo. We are waiting for some kind of gov't paperwork to be processed that shows the rounds are not stolen from the US gov't. I love the Ruger Mini-14 above all the long guns I have ever shot. Only problem that I have is I shoot too many rounds when I can go someplace with a 700-1300 yard clear spot with a good safe back drop. In Texas that wasn't such a problem, but around here, they are building houses everywhere. This is one gun that Ruger really does right and if we ever have a WWIII, I plan to have mine in top performance. If I have learned anything from those prophets of Israel, it will happen but guess what? God's team wins!

I do think that Ruger could be more specific. The receivers of my Mini's are all marked .223, however in the manual the suggested cartridge is marked .223(5.56) and seems to indicate they are one in the same. I fully understand the difference and have confirmed that the chamber throat of the Mini-14 is set up for the 5.56. Marking everything as .223 creates some confusion when compared to other .223 guns from Ruger, like my .223 bolt gun which is also marked .223.

I guess I am a little too anal on technical items like this, but it does create some confusion.

Most people will never have a problem doing it (with your normal name-brand factory ammo), and haven't and so swear it is ok to do so. Do some reading on it as there are lots and lots of detailed info on it and the pressures and non-standard NATO stuff and differences.

Only takes once, just play it safe

edit: No i do not own a mini. Went straight off of what i have learned about weapons stamped .223. If the manual says ok, then by all means, go for it. And yep, leade not headspace. Sorry for any misinformation.
You should check your sources. Even Ruger themselves say its ok.
