Exactly! I shake my head everytime I hear someone use that lefty term.

Back to the rifle, I'm gonna add a little more depth to my answer. An underfolder AK. It's small, mags are dirt cheap (for any AK), ammo is dirt cheap & the AK will be running when nothing else will. Don't get me wrong, I'm not planning on my Mini quitting, but I know the AK wont.

The reviews of Mini vs. AR and AK seem to be equally divided. I'd go with the Mini between 50-75 yards but I love my Ruger rifles and Made in the USA means a lot to me...

Oh I hate it when politics enter into these threads! I have to say that "assault rifle" isn't a lefty term at all. It was coined by Adolf Hitler (Sturmgewehr 44 -- "storm rifle") -- hardly a liberal in any sense of the word. The rifles that evolved from the St44 were called assault rifles. For the record, there are A LOT of progressives who own and carry firearms. We don't let the NRA do our thinking for us, but we love our guns. FWIW.

Felix, I don't want to hijack my own thread into politics, but please don't fall into the fallacy that the Nazis were "right-wing" evil against the righteous liberals of the left. Modern "liberals" (since FDRs advisers hijacked the word from its original meaning) come from the same intellectual DNA as the Progressive movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which is the same DNA as the Socialist, Communist and fascist movements in Europe. You can get a good grounding in this history from "Liberal Fascism" by Jonah Goldberg, available cheaply in paperback. The American "right-wing" conservative tradition goes straight back to Jefferson and Madison through Reagan, Coolidge and Lincoln.

As far as the SD rifle goes, I have decided that my best option is a Kel-Tec SU-16C. Unfortunately, it is currently unobtainium new, and sellers in the used markets are asking for 50% premiums over list price.

Interesting choice re: rifle. Don't know much about it but will have to brush up!

My point wasn't to say that Hitler was right wing or left wing (he embraced both extremes) but to object to this idea that "lefties" own the term "assault rifle" -- historically, it's descriptive not ideological. The evolution of liberal and conservative ideologies is far more complex than what you describe here and I disagree with your characterizations. However this isn't the time or place, eh? Internet should come with a barstool! :-)

Good look with your SD search!

Stainless Mini for a truck gun. Well, any Mini would be good, but Stainless seems better for a truck gun, unless you have never ever in your life left the window down on the farm or work site and let it rain inside of the truck.

either will serve you well, but the AKs are cheaper on the bottom end than a new Mini. cheaper magazines, cheaper parts, and the guns run ALL the time.

I know AKs are great and mags are definitely cheaper. But I'll take the Mini any day of the week. I prefer the feel and handling, and am completely confident in it's reliability.

I like aks but in a SHTF situation how long do you think they will keep importing russian ammo cause I cant remember the last time I seen a box of 7.62x39 that was anything other than imported Russian steel.

Buying an AK is a crap shoot as far as fit and finish are concerned. I've seen them with laminated wood stocks that were nailed together and really rough to the touch. You must do a bit of research to find out where the good ones are made.

I've never seen a new Mini that was not as well finished as is possible with mass production. I've owned 2 in my life going back nearly 30 years. I've never experienced a FTF and am completely confident in its reliability. I also like the basic wood/blued. The Mini does everything I want a HD/SHTF long gun to do without looking too kook tactical, its not threatening looking while doing what I want it to do.
