I am refinishing the birch stock of my mini 14 to a walnut colored finish. I have noticed that around the end of the fore stock and around the butt plate the stock is stained red. While I think my alcohol based walnut stain will cover this stain, I wonder if anyone knows why the stain occurred. I have done nothing I know of to create the stain and it occured slowly over time. Thanks for you comments.

I'm just throwing this out there from way out in left field, but I wonder if it could be tarnished from the metal butt plate/gas block in the respective areas, or if somehow some moisture got trapped in those areas and spread under the stain. Not that you got the gun wet or didn't take care of it, but I'm just thinking of places that moisture or even Hoppes or another cleaning solvent might accrue and those are likely places.
