I just picked up 6 Tapco 30 rd Mags at a gun show a couple of weeks ago. The fit and finish are fine. I have yet to try them out. I'll get back after I have them to the range. Gotta love the Mini...

When I can afford it I'd love the following.
Ruger 1022 with an M1A Configuration (Cheap Plinking)
Mini 14 (cover .223/5.56)
An Actual M1A (covers a "battle rifle")

Heymatthew, my son (whose name happens to be matthew!) and I both put the Smith Enterprises Good Iron muzzle brake on our tacticals. Makes a huge difference in shootability. By that I mean less muzzle rise , less felt recoil , faster target acquisition . There is a youtube video that shows factory flash hider vs. Good Iron and the results are impressive. We are very happy with the improvement on an already awesome rifle! Oh and DAJ , what do I get free shipping on with my Cabelas Visa?

Was it the threaded model or the one that attaches with a set screw?

Good luck with your mini. I have several and never had any problems with them or the factory 20 round mags. I don't have any factory 30 rounders so can't comment on them.

Congrates on the mini ... the newer ones are more accurate than the older ones..
so have no regrets.
Besides, the older ones, while not tack drivers... they are still fun carbines to shoot and I wouldn't sell mine.
My old mini was my surrogate for a m14 or Garand back on the late 70's...
and it took a while but added them to my gathering of rifles too.
Much different shooting a mini, or m14/m1a, or garand than the black rifles.
Hate hearing the spring in my ear from the plastic black rifles.
Real rifles have wood!

Heymatthew, the muzzle brake is the Smith Good Iron muzzle brake and it is the threaded one. Make sure you check the thread pitch before you order, some of the tacticals are 1/2 by 28 tpi , and some are 9/16 by 24 tpi. You won't be disappointed.

As for the whole mini vs. AR/black rifle I have a 581 mini and that thing is darn accurate, I also have a S&W AR also a fantastic rifle. The mini can go toe to toe with the AR But to me comparing the two is like compairing apples to oranges. they're just both fantastic guns, both super reliable, and both fun to shoot and I honestly couldn't pick a favorite.

Oh and DAJ , what do I get free shipping on with my Cabelas Visa? | Looks like you can get free shipping with anything you order and no minimum. As long as you use Cabela's Visa. Saves me a lot on ammo as it's more expensive here in California and we pay at the very least 7.75% sales tax, depending on where in the state you buy it. Walmart usually has the cheapest but still have to pay tax.

Hey DAJ, do you mean I get free shipping anywhere because I have a Cabelas visa or is it one ammo place in particular? Help!

Congratulations!
I too purchased a Mini-14 Tactical just about 2 weeks ago now. I paid $670 on GunBrokers.com for mine. I actually haven't been able to shoot it yet but I plan on it Monday. I took it apart for the first time and did a cleaning and loaded up the mag with ammo and it's just waiting. The only purchase I've made for it so far is a 46" bag from Midway USA and a 6" rail from ATI to replace the 2" rail on the bottom. I didn't realize you had to drill holes to mount it, so I'm just going to wait until I buy a bipod and/or grip before I mount it. I'm saving my pennies for an Aimpoint PRO as well.
And YES, I have a Cabela's VISA as well. Glad to see they extended the free shipping until the end of the year. |

I've got some ideas for it in the future, but I think I'll run it like it is out of the box for now. Interested to hear your thoughts!

Andrew | Andrew,
I'm with you. I sort of feel like comparing a Mini to an AR just because it shoots the same ammunition is like comparing a BMW M5 to a Jetta Wagon just because they use the same kind of gasoline. They serve different purposes and are built for specific functions. The AR is expandable, versatile and customizable. The Mini is reliable, fast-handling and known for maneuverability. Really different shooting concepts if you ask me.
Glad to hear you're having good luck with your 581-series.
