| Mini 30 question
I'm looking into getting a new mini-30 for plinking and hunting. I've read that the barrel is made slightly too small to shoot cheap Russian AK ammo. Is this true? And if so, why would Ruger make their barrels like this?

Your welcome.
I have over 1000 rounds of steel cased tula and wolf through my 582 series with out a hick up.
They're fun guns.. so much so that i bought a mini 14 too...

I've heard that Mini 30 barrel is 308 & Russian ammo is 310 but that the Mini 30 is strong enough to handle the pressure increase of the slightly larger bullet. If true or not I dont know just something I heard.

i don't fret about the rumors... My Mini-30 shoots great and hits what I aim at using Russian Ammo most of the time. That's good enough for me. |

My understanding is that prior to the 2004/5 redesign of the Mini 30 the barrels were bored to .308 (smaller than the .311 Russian ammo) which could create accuracy issues. However, shortly after the initial first redesign was rolled out Ruger started producing/delivering .311 (or .310) barrels on the Mini 30.
I'm not chiseling this into stone, but I read it from a number sources before I bought mine last year. It is very accurate and reliable with Golden Bear Ammo which is the only Russian ammo I shoot.

The first ones had the smaller bore---I e-mailed Ruger a few years back on this---and was told they switched to the larger bore around 1990 or so.
No worries with a new gun.

I have all weather rancher mini30 and even bought spring kit from accuracy systems and they are the specialists with this gun and mine won't shoot tulammo or wolf reliably. When I called accuracy systems back the tech said some just won't prime Russian ammo. However it will shoot hornady sst steel all day but can't afford to and there is no brass 7.62x39 out there reasonably priced. So luckily I can get ae tactical .223 100 rnd boxes for25 and 90 grain rorg 5.56 NATO for same price. That being said I miss shooting my 30 it is an awesome rifle

Thats a shame.. my all weather new out of the box shoots nothing but tula or wolf... ive never tried anything else.
My new out of the box mini 14 had problems feeding the first 10 rounds, but the next 10 rounds was flawless.. i havent even tried any of the 20 round mags..

yeah i have fired under 400 rounds thru it.gonna call tomorrow and have them fix it. there is some wear on bolt little extractor part and i hope they have upgrade the rear sight and change that out also as i have broke an allen wrench off in it trying to get it off so i can get a better sight.it has allen nuts on both sides of aperture ring and is a pain to adjust. let y'all know when its back.

i love all these gun rumors--how do they start? concocted by gun store commandos?
1911s aren't accruate....false
ruger would market a rifle with a caliber rating that doesn't work with rounds of that caliber--absurd

I put a Nikon 3-9x40 Prostaff on mine but i am going to use it for hunting. Aim small, miss small. Remington Corelokts for that. The Cabelas Herters brand shot fine in mine for busting cans and bottles. A 20ga or 12ga shotgun loaded with high brass 6 shot is great HD setup. Inside the home the pattern might spread to 2-3" but probably hits like a slug and the pellets disperse through the body but doesn't overpenetrate. If the hole doesn't kill them they wil probably die of lead poisoning. Buckshot and slugs can go through sheet rock like a hot knife through butter. If they are outside your house a pattern to the backside at 30-40yds can really persuade them to pick another house for the next break in. 6 shot will penetrate denim at that range. Don't ask me how I know.
