I am acquiring a series 182 Mini-14, and it's my understanding that there's no real optimum way to attach a scope to these earlier models.

From my research, the most common scope mount is the side mount variety, in which case you have to remove the bolt lock cover plate. I've heard that these sometimes break when removing them. I've also heard that the scope mount that replaces the plate can never be adequately tightened.

I see that there's a variety of manufacturers of these side mounts, all requiring the same installation steps (generally speaking).

Has anyone had any experience with the side mount variety? Do you have an opinion or recommendation in so far as a good brand to purchase?

I have also heard that a top mount variety can be installed, but I am yet to see one advertised. It also appears that the rear site may have to be removed to accomplish this.

Has anyone had any experience with the top mount variety?

Any feedback on this subject would be appreciated.

I have a UTG side mount on my new model mini. The mount is ok, but after some shooting it seems to come loose. I've found it to be somewhat inaccurate so I pretty much gave up on using my glass, and just sticking to my irons.

That is why I just traded my Mini for the Ranch Rifle. No good way to mount a scope. There is (at least) one mount that mounts to the top of the gas block but Ruger says not to mess with the gas block.

You can now buy a stock that has a rail attached to it. I have taken off my side mount, I will send it to you if you want. I have no use for it. I mounted a holosight towards the front of my mini, like a scout rifle. It is a very quick sight.

I didnt like the side mount, there is a company that now makes a stock with a rail attached, I think that the name is ATI. I now have a holosite mounted solidly with no problems at all.

Thanks for the response, SP SGT. I'm looking into the replacement stock by API. So far I'm having no luck, as my Mini is an older model and it appears that the replacement stock is not compatable with the older models. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Of the side-mounted variety of optic rails, I believe B-Square is the name brand to have. They seem a bit more sturdy than others, and once you have it properly leveled, it has locking screws to keep it in place... B-square Mini 14 Sporting Rifle Scope Mount FREE S&H 14502, 14506. Well, I was about ready to give up on the idea, but now maybe I will give B Square a shot (no pun intended!). At the least, I will look into it further. If I go for the idea, I will most definitely keep the scopes that you recommend in mind. All the info you supplied is much appreciated. I won't have the Mini for another week or two, and it will be a while before I know how it all works out. Thanks again!

Will this BSquare mount work on a new model 582 series Ranch Rifle? I have been looking around for some sort of see through mount, and this looks like it would work and still allow use of the iron sights.

I fixed my cheap nc star mount by drilling and tapping a second hole in the bolt stop cover.

I put a S&K Ruger mini 14 scope mount on my mini, works great holds zero no prob, you do lose your open sights, I put a Vortex strikeforce red dot on it, and it's dead bang. I've run at lest 1000 rounds through it since installation and still right on at 100 yds.
