I'm a decent shot.
I have a "few" garands... all USGI... and one custom built..
I have one USGI, all orginal, that out shoots even the custom built one.
Even though the garand spec was, no more than 4moa... others can shoot a lot better than that... and I have one that is better than the rest in my gathering.

Everybody likes to talk about sub MOA, half MOA, etc. I think there are very few shooters who can take advantage of that kind of accuracy in a rifle. I know I can't, and I don't need to. I'm only interested in practical accuracy and the Mini-14 is a very practical rifle. Let's say, a head shot @50 yards or a center mass shot @300 yards. That I can do. I'll almost certainly never need more accuracy than that (and I hope I never need that).
The Mini has a bad rep because Ruger took decades to fix such a simple problem with the barrel. I wouldn't want a pre-580 unless it was a deal I couldn't pass up. But they still hold their value. If you want to see how bad the problem was, check out the slo-mo video here: Slow Motion Ruger Mini 14 Barrel Firing | Military.com |

| 180 Series
I have a 180 series bought sometime in 1974 or there abouts.
Too this day it shoots 2 MOA at 100 yds or less and opens up when the barrel heats up. This was the first rifle I bought myself.
I can't tell you the deer is has taken in its time. It is legal to hunt with this weapon in my state with the 5 rd mag. some were taken at 150 yds plus. My eyes were better then.
I think this year I'll take her out again.
Maybe when money is more prevalent I'll get a chance to buy a new model. I like the looks of em.
When some one says my old girl ain't accurate, I just show 'em.
I bought a AR-15 Bushmaster 5 or 6 years ago because the quality seemed better that what I used in the Army which was the old A1 and A2 and its a good accurate weapon.
But My Favorites are in this order;
Mini-14
M1A
Savage 110
Ar-15
I also own a 10/22 and a 22/45.
Great weapons!

The barrel flexing is not limited to the Mini 14. Wednsday night at the range had some video of an FAL doin the same thing. The early light barreled AR/M16 did it to. And all rifles do it to some extent. Nice dramatic veiw tho.

I dont' care what ANYONE tries to tell you... the 580/581 series are plenty accurate at 100 to 150 yds. Anything beyond that- wrong tool for the job in my opinion.

I have only been able to get my 582 series Minis out to the 75 foot (25 yard) range so far the last couple of months. But the groups they get at this insufficient distance (25 yards) is every bit as good as my excellent AR rifle. |
