| Ruger Rifle day at the range
My 13 year old son and I went to Field Time Target & Training range here in OC, California today. We shot my 1982 vintage Mini 14 (182 series) and the Ruger SR556. What a nice couple of rifles!
We put about 400 rounds downrange. Had one dud round which I do not think was the fault of the SR556. Otherwise, both rifles performed to perfection with nice tight shot groups excluding the occasional "flyer" round cause by shooter error.
Both rifles are remarkably easy to field strip and clean. Gotta love the piston system on the SR556. Hardly any crud in the Bolt Carrier Group (BCG) in stark contrast to a conventional AR rifle.
Great way to spend the day with my son!

Get your hands on a old folder? My GPa has one, oh I wish that stock was compatible on the 580's...

Sounds like you had a great day with your son, nice way to build memories.
I have a mini mfg in 1978, actually shot 10 rounds through it about an hour ago with my sisters, we were at P.D.pistol range but i always have it in the truck, what weight of bullet do you get the best accuracy with, i know the older guns were not designed for the heavier rounds? My dad says 40-52 grains, but anything lighter than 55 is almost impossible to find.

My groups looked surprisingly good considering how rusty I am. Of course I was only shooting at around 50 feet so it is not as though I was really working hard.
The local range requires 1 second interval between shots so that and the California 10 round magazine limit probably kept the barrel from heating up enough to affect accuracy.
To answer your question, my staple .223 round is 55 grain, which, as you say, is about as light as you can find nowadays. My Mini will shoot this and like it.

Thanks for the response, i have the mini with me most of the time, it has been in the family since it was bought new in 1978, i have had it it my possession about a year now. Most of my shooting with it are done at 100 yards because i shoot my Maadi more than anything else and i set targets for it at the range at 100,200,250, and 300. 55 grn group pretty well at 100-175 yards which is the norm for these rifles as far as i know, i had some older 44 grain given to me and it held tighter out to the 200yrd mark, shot some 65grn at 150 and most were key holing, i don't think there is enough barrel twist to get the heavy stuff spinning fast enough, i,m here in Oklahoma so yes i get a little wild sometimes with the 20,30,and 40 rnd mags The Maddi of course stays tight out to the 300yrd range and will eat anything and everything ! Thanks for the visit, come out to the Indian nations sometime and we will shoot some 100 rnd drums. |

Watch out; I may take you up on that invite sometime. |
