Good question. I bought my SR556E for $1030 + tax. I'm not sure how much money you would save, I can't see them selling the upper for less than $799. They *could but they probably won't. That would probably be a bad business decision for them IMO.

Sure do love the SR556E -- here is mine. I added just the lower rail to accommodate the forward grip handle:


This is just such a fun rifle! I could not believe how nice my groups were the first time I shot it. And the cleaning ... the piston system is the way to go IMSOHO.

What about just ordering the hand guard and changing them out? Sure you have to push out some pins, but it isn't that difficult.

I called Ruger about that. Their advice....Don't do it. The handguard has to be done by Ruger. Something about the warranty or something like that.

Ruger tends to refuse to sell any parts that are involving any possibility of danger in installation.
