Mini 14 Ranch

I'm doing the homework to acquire and install a sight/scope system on my Mini 14 Ranch version, in .223 cal.

While looking at the countless Mini-14's on the countless websites on the Internet, I noticed a difference, my rifle has a wood upper fore-end over the barrel (rifle serial # 180-00907), which is different from what I see out there.

I'm trying to conserve the original style of the rifle.

Is there a sturdy sight/scope mounting system for the Ranch 14 that does not interfere with the line of sight of the original iron sights?

I would appreciate recommendations on the mounting system and optics for the task at hand.

thanks

I've got a set on order of the weaver "see thru" rings. Seems like there are mixed reviews on whether or not they interfere with the iron sights. Otherwise, I'd look at the Warne QD rings. They will definitely interfere, but you should be able to take them on/off easily. There is a GG&G rail that will mount that has a "see thru" cut out and I think a UTG side mounting system as well that is "see thru".

Don't know if this will work on the Mini 14, but on my AK 47 I use a Tru-Glo red dot scope. It rides hight enough to use the iron sights. You might check it out at your LGS.

I haven't done this on a Mini. I have had Weaver's see-thru rings before, on a 30-30 lever gun. They work as-advertized (well) in that application. The issue I had/have is that they are so high, which they have to be to get the scope clear of the sights and let you see the sights well enough to use them, that it's quite un-natural/uncomfortable using the scope. You need a fairly tall riser/cheek pad on the stock. Once you put that on, then the comb is far too high to see the iron sights. This isn't a defect with the Weaver rings, though, it's just the nature of having a scope mounted so high and above the iron sights.

I've never had an offset (to the side) scope, so I'm not sure how that would work/feel. The Mini points and aims so well, as-is, that I've been reluctant to scope it, despite the fact that at this point I really need a scope to be able to hit much in the way of small things past 100-ish yards.

Peter21... your model as is mine...(180) does not allow for scopes. It is not supported by Ruger and parts are scarce for it. It is not drilled anywhere to accept them. Your options are limited but not completely hopeless.

If you were to remove the rear peep sight... you could attach a "No-Drill No-Tap" scope mount from S&K at about $70 plus shipping. But.. you will lose the iron sights option.

The other option will remove the wooden top cover which you state you desire to keep and replace it with a scout rail. This scout rail is made by Ultimak for the 180 series. It's pricey at $140 or so. It really changes the look of the 180 by removing that wooden cover. Not in a good way to my thinking....but it is an option.

Also be aware that this model (180) ejects the brass straight up and will strike any scope directly overhead of the chamber repeatedly. The newer Ranch Rifles eject sideways.

I have both the 180 and a 580 Ranch Rifle Tactical. Great rifles.

My friend also has a 180 xxx Mini. We ordered this piece for a scope mount. Just save the rear sight parts. I use old prescrip bottles and label them. This setup worked well for him. It is model #2270-180...............Joe
