Ruger Mini-14 Tactical "Scout"

I wanted a light, maneuverable, "fighting carbine" that would eat any ammo, not be sensitive to the shit of hard use, could be used in close quarters as well as out to 300+yrds and have a BUIS. The Gunsite Scout was almost there but it was seriously lacking in capacity and use-ability. Having to come off the trigger to work the bolt was a liability and a limit of 10 slow fired rounds just wasn't going to cut it.
After some time considering what I liked, didn't like, what I felt would work and didn't work so well. I also had a tight budget for this setup and had to have it be both affordable to build and shoot. This is the rifle I came up with:
A base 580xxx Mini-14 .223/5.56mm Tactical, Ultimak Scout rail, Leatherwood/Hi-Lux LER 2-7x32 scope w/ UTG LE quik-detach rings, 20/30 round Ruger mags and an Allen neoprene silent sling.

Nice combo. Ruger sells one that way in the law enforcement catalog using the Amega Ranges scout rail. It was the reason I made a scout rail one of my first upgrades.

thx Thor.....The setup handles great too. I've also, really come to appreciate the "scout scope" this one on x2 is acts as a quick acquisition site with zoom for all the range I'll ever need with this rifle.
All that's left it too shoot it. Its unusual for me but I haven't had a chance to do it yet With the kids on vaca. this week and family plans this weekend, looks like the fun stuff will have to wait until next week.

Awards Showcase

That is one smart looking rifle. I have given serious thought to replacing my sold off Mini but keep looking at the Mini 30 Tactical.

I have never attempted to use a scope set up as far forward as the one you have, so I must ask... How is the eye-relief? Since the opening is far forward from the normal 2-4 inches, do you 'see' the full image in the scope? Sorry if it is a dumb question, but if I hold a scope that far from my eye, I am seeing a much smaller image than I get when it is in the normal distance from my face.

The scope is an LER(Long Eye Relief) made for 10"-12". The forward mount would not work well with a standard scope. Having an LER in the forward position is fantastic on a rifle like or my prior GSR.

So how is your setup working out? Have you had to make any changes?

I just got a stainless 580 series Mini 14 and want to make some changes. I really like the looks of yours.

Please let me know before I follow your shopping list and find out later something didn't work out

Thanks
Greg
