SR556 and 300 Blackout barrel.

Has anyone looked into changing the barrel out on their SR556 for a 300 Blackout? I'm thinking about it, but with it being a piston system, I'm not sure what problems I would face.

Just the barrel? I would imagine it would be a pain because of the way the hand guard is attached with roll pins...and yeah, there's the gas piston thing too. I don't know much about the 300 AAC Blackout...is it typically a DI system?

I do know of one SR that has had the barrel changed on it, so although it is possible it will not be easy.

300 AAC BLACKOUT (300BLK)

It's a 7.62 round but you're able to use everything from your 5.56. Same BCG, magazines...everything.

Was thinking about buying this upper but I figured changing the barrel might be easier. I guess not.

Yeah, for just the barrel there's too many variables to consider.

a. what hand guards would you use?

b. would non-ruger hand guards even fit on the SR556 upper? Maybe? The SR-556 upper is unique among AR-15 uppers though in the way Ruger roll pins the hand guards on.

c. what operating system would you use with the barrel...it's only 9" so you couldn't use the gas piston that came with the ruger. Seems like you'd need to use the same BC though so most likely you'd have to stick with a piston. Don't know if the ruger SR-556 upper would even accept a different BC? Does anyone know the answer to this?

By the time you figure out all that mess and make it work it would it would just be simpler to get the whole AAC upper.

Yeah. I'm starting to think that, too.
